Brought my boat to HJ Marine for hard to start motor issue on a 1980 ******** 70HP motor. On 5/24/21 they quoted $974 to put 3 carb kits in to resolve this issue. I went ahead and gave them the okay to complete the job. Took the boat on vacation and it was hard to start still and it seemed like they didn't do anything. I have had carb kits put in before and this totally was bizarre and I was convinced maybe they just cleaned the carbs. When I returned from vacation I immediately contacted them and asked for proof they did change the kits. She sent me an ****** link showing what they put in. I inquired if these were for high altitude and she had no clue. So you do a $974 repair and you don't know you need to install the proper jets at this altitude? She mentioned a house call but then never answered when I asked if I would be charged more. My experience with them has been awful and I would prefer money refunded. Henry is the only certified marine tech but someone else did the work.

On 07/06/2023 I brought my boat in for a tune up and new battery. Told it would be between $500 and $600 out the door. Since I was there I asked them to grease the ***** bearings. A 15 minute job *** as ******** is right there. They told me they would call me for approval for anything extra that they found. I never received a call, text or email. The tech decided to replace and repack the bearings for $447 dollars plus another $52.00 for the new bearings I never asked for. Who in the h*** would agree to that? 2 hours labor at $150/HR magically hit the invoice at $447.00 instead of the $300 it should be. Of course now they claim the seals were garbage blah blah blah... No one asked me for approval. Now add in a fuel/water separator for another $100. I never asked for or approved that service. Then they put in the new plugs which they claim took 2.5 hours for another $372 in labor alone. I could have pulled the motor out in less time.My 500 to 600 dollar tune up was invoiced at $2085.00.If you think that's a fair price then this is the shop for you.Otherwise I would avoid this ripoff shop like the plague.

    H&J Marine Response

    07/07/2023

On 7/5/23, **** brought his boat into H&J Marine for maintenance. **** requested several services including installation of a new battery, trailer bearing repack, oil change and tune-up. Listed on the Job Estimate Agreement that was signed when the boat was dropped off, are the services requested and the labor rate + parts for these services and approval for these services. The services performed were installation of a new battery, trailer bearings were removed, cleaned, new seals added and repacked with grease on both sides of the trailer, an oil change, a tune-up, and installation of a fuel water separator (this was removed from the customers bill as he did not approved this service, but needed this service for his boat to run correctly as it was stated by the customer the separator had not been changed in 2 years). When **** was called to let him know the work was complete and his invoice was ready, the customer stated he knew the trailer bearings would take about 3 hours which is approximately $447, when reviewing the invoice, but when he arrived to pick-up the boat he stated he had not talked to anyone on the phone, however, on the same call asked to have the credit card fee removed because he was paying cash, and was sent this invoice per his request, which he showed on his mobile device. **** came to pick up his boat on 7/6/23 and stated he would be paying his bill with a credit card and that he would dispute the charges on the services requested. **** was informed this was fraudulent behavior and illegal, thus we would not accept his credit card, and that he needed to complete payment with a cash only. After the police were called, **** eventually stated, he was unable to afford the bill. The bill was reduced by half, although all work was completed as he requested. This customer did not have any intention of paying his bill and stated what service he wanted vaguely to allow himself the ability to deny he had requested the services and not pay the bill on his boat.
