Recently, I noticed a charge of $6 on my statement for an "Enhanced Checking Fee" that has been occurring every month. I looked into this further, and I have been charged $6 a month since May of 2020. I have never signed up for this, as I originally had essential checking (I think it was called) and have always had direct deposit, so my checking account was free. I went to my local branch to ask about this today, and they said everyone was transferred over to a "comparable" account around that time, and I should have been notified. How is transferring me from something free to $6 a month comparable, when the essential checking still existed? I was also not notified OR asked if this was ok, as I would have canceled it immediately. It apparently came with identity protection that I was supposed to sign up for or something and you can even check that I never did sign up for anything. I asked for that money back, which would be $282 in total (there were 3 that were refunded back for some reason in the beginning, not sure why, so I did not include those amounts) and was told that was not possible. I feel like I've been completely scammed by my own bank.

Very unhappy with the CU--I opened my account in 1982, and I felt that as a long time member I deserved better than to have the CU remove all of my funds $5 at a time in a sudden change of policy last year. Sure, I should have paid attention to my statements, but as they have not varied much in the **40** years I have been a member, I really did not expect to suddenly have "inactivity fees" assessed until now my balance is pretty much 0. The person I spoke to claimed that the CU had ":reached out to me multiple times via email and phone" but could not tell me what email address or phone number they might have used, and I certainly did not receive any such communication. Beware, prospective members, as this institution apparently feels it should behave as a commercial bank does now. Too bad. I guess they can send my last 2 statements as they zero out my account completely, and at least I'll have the satisfaction of costing them a couple of postage stamps.

    Mutual Security Credit Union Response

One of our top priorities is member satisfaction. We were sorry to hear that Joanne was unhappy with her account experience. Our Member Care Manager quickly got in touch with Joanne to explain what she can do to keep the account open, and that the incurred fees will be refunded. Joanne was satisfied with the call and is once again a happy member of Mutual Security Credit Union.
