Government Action: BBB reports on known government actions involving business’ marketplace conduct:
    3:24-cv-02396

The following describes a government action that has been resolved by either a settlement or a decision by a court or administrative agency. If the matter is being appealed, it will be noted below.

On April 25, 2024, Williams-Sonoma Inc. and dba’s Williams Sonoma Home, Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids, Pottery Barn Teen, PBTeen, West Elm, Rejuvenation, Outward and Mark & Graham entered into a permanent injunction (case:3:24-cv-02396), brought against the company by United States of America on behalf of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

According to complaint, the business advertised multiple products for sale as “made in the USA” but were found to have been made in China and other foreign countries. The FTC found that Williams-Sonoma Inc. was in violation of a 2020 order requiring the company be truthful about their “Made in USA” claims.

The complaint alleges the business marketed mattress pads as “crafted in America from domestic and imported materials” but the mattresses were in fact made overseas. The FTC investigated 6 additional products the company advertised as made in the USA and concluded that the claims were also deceptive and violated the 2020 order.

As part of the agreement, Williams-Sonoma is required to a pay $3.175 million dollar civil penalty for violating the 2020 order and will have requirements and restrictions placed on  “made in the US” unqualified, qualified and assembly claims.
