We are a housing nonprofit and one of our clients entered a rental agreement inherited by ********************** Land Development. Address: *************************************************************Our organization paid a full month's rent - $600 - for July 2023 on June 29, 2023 using our grant ******** On July 9, 2023, **** ********************** contacted us to inform us that the unit has been abandoned and that he would be sending people over to change the locks and throw out the tenant's belongings. He justified that the unit has been abandoned because there is a sign on the unit's front door that, although tattered, states "I moved out."July 10: I explained to Mr. ********************** that the sign has been on that door for a while and we conducted a home visit as recent as July 7 where we were able to successfully make contact with the client in her unit, proving that the unit has been occupied recently. Mr. ********************** ignored this fact and kept insisting the unit was abandoned because he had "been there all weekend" and the door has been "wide open." I explained to him that there is a proper channel to file an eviction or desertion of leased property, but he did not listen. As of 9:07 AM EST July 10, Mr. ********************** informed us that the property had been secured. Mr. ********************** did not adhere to the process laid out in ** Code 37-6-6 regarding desertion of a leased property. We are requesting reimbursement of rent paid for the time period of July 10 - July 31, 2023.We believe that Mr. ********************** responded in this way to due the justifiable frustration he had for the unacceptable condition our client left his unit in. Removal of the tenant is an understandable response to this situation. However, proper channels must be followed.Note: A lease has been provided in supporting documents. ********************** Land Development acquired the property from the original owners. Not sure when this transfer took place, but we were instructed to begin depositing rent into ********************** Land Development's ********* account on April 25, 2023.
