On 4/3/24 I got my Bridge redone. I have two dental insurances, my primary is Cigna dental and my secondary is Delta dental, my husband insurance. McDonough Center for Family Dentistry told me that my I only had to pay $25.00. I agreed to get the Bridge redone based on what I was quoted as my out of pocket expense. They sent me several bills and emails and texts starting in 3/25 stating that I owe $798.91. McDonough Center for Family Dentistry is stating that the secondary did not pay their entire portion and they reduced the procedure to a partial instead of a bridge after the dental work had been completed. When I contacted ************ they indicated to me that on their website it indicates to the dentist office that any procedures over $200.00 a predetermination should be completed. My issue is that McDonough Center for Family Dentistry did not complete a predetermination to verify what would be covered or not covered by ************ and now they are expecting me to $798.91. If a predetermination had been completed by McDonough Center for Family Dentistry like it was supposed to then I would have been aware of the correct out of pocket expense and I could have decided if I was going to get the bridge redone or not. It's not fair that McDonough Center for Family Dentistry did not do their jobs properly and now I am being held responsible. I would like for them to write this bill off or make some type of adjustment because they need to own their responsibility and part in not properly doing their job in the best interest of the client. McDonough Center for Family Dentistry told me that they would make sure that next time they would do a predetermination. That's unacceptable. The predetermination should have been done on 4/3/24 and every time that a procedure is over $200.00. I was not aware that a predetermination was needed for anything over $200.00. I am aware now and I can make decisions for myself the next time. I need this matter fixed and resolved.

McDonough Center for Family Dentistry files dental claims as a courtesy to patients. The office is not responsible for how a patients insurance company handles its claims or for what benefits they pay on claims. The office can only assist patients in estimating what their portion of the cost of treatment will be. It is the patients responsibility to be familiar with their insurance benefits.

The patient was given a copy of the office financial policies, which she signed. She was also given a treatment plan estimating her out of pocket cost for the treatment, which she signed. The treatment plan states, "this is not a guarantee of payment but an estimate of the benefits available for the proposed services to be rendered."

It is unfortunate that this was the outcome, but it does happen. This is why it states in the office financial agreement, If your insurance company disallows a claim or only pays a portion of the amount owed for services, payment for your balance is your responsibility.

The office is willing to work with the patient and has offered to let her make payments monthly. If the patient has a dental emergency, she can still be seen regardless of her outstanding balance.

I was massively over-billed (also, the all-inclusive costs of my bridge were unbundled and billed seperately.) I was billed for a core-build up that was not performed (and the office filed a claim to my insurance for that core build-up.) They left a temorary retainer crown too long, which caused a lot of pain in the tooth (they had the gall to bill my insurance for bite wings due to THEIR mistake.) And two different dental assistants damaged two of my teeth (one intentionally in August of 2024, the other accidentally in October of 2024.) Both injuries were reported to the dental office and parent company when they occured. I have been completely ignored regarding those injuries. My primary Endontist, located at another office has confirmed the one tooth now needs a root canal (which is scheduled to be done near the end of November 2024.) And confirmed the other tooth is likely cracked (pain and bleeding on one side of that tooth.) My permanent bridge had to be re-made by the lab, and I am supposed to go back November 19 to have it seated. The cracked and bleeding tooth has a root canal, done at their office one month before they injured it. It is also a retainer tooth for my bridge. I will likey loose the tooth, so the bridge is pretty much useless to me at this point.

On 8/13/2024 ******** ******* was seen at the McDonough office for a toothache on a front tooth. The patient had a limited examination by Dr. ***** *****, and one x-ray was taken. During the exam, the patient indicated having pain on tooth #8 with palpation and percussion. The provider informed the patient that the tooth was most likely fractured. During the exam the patient told Dr. ***** that she was told by her previous Endodontist that RCT was needed on tooth #9. Dr. ***** referred the patient to endo for evaluation for teeth #8 and #9. He also discussed the options of a bridge on teeth #7 -X-#9 with the patient.
On 8/19/2024 ******** was seen at the McDonough office for treatment completed by Dr. ***** *****. The patient had decided to move forward with the option of the bridge. Dr. ***** completed an extraction of tooth #8,build-ups were done on teeth #7 and #9, and a temporary bridge was seated.
On 9/03/2024 ******** was seen at the McDonough office by Dr. ***** ******, an Endodontist, to evaluate and treat tooth #9 that ******** had told Dr. ***** needed RCT.
On 9/30/2024 ******** was seen at the McDonough office to have the final impression taken with the digital scanner for her bridge. Before leaving, her temporary bridge was cemented back on.
On 10/08/2024 ******** was seen at the McDonough office for a limited examination with Dr. ******* *********. The patient came into the office stating that her upper front teeth hurt when drinking hot and cold drinks. The provider checked the patients bite and adjusted as needed. The patient stated that it felt better.
On 10/28/2024 ******** was seen at the ***************** to have her final bridge seated. The patient was not happy with the length of teeth #8 and #9, stating that she wanted them longer. Her bridge scan was sent back to lab to remake. Patient requested to wear permanent bridge until new one comes in.
During her treatment at the McDonough office, no damage has been done to the patients teeth. We have contacted her ******************* and attached their correspondence.
When billing our treatment to insurance that requires multiple appointments, not everything can be billed out in one claim. This is why there were two separate claims sent to the patients insurance for her bridge. The patient was not overcharged, and she was not billed for treatment that was not completed.

      Customer Answer

      Date: 11/18/2024

I spoke with my primary ****************** after speaking with a very nice lady named ***** from ***************************. He stated tooth #** has absolutely been shaven down, and my primary Dentist said my charts show no indication of decay on that tooth. And my Endontist said there is possibly a crack in tooth #8 (although he can't determine that for sure.) ***** explained the billing to me when I spoke with her. Also, the Dr. ******* assistant suggested the first bridge from the lab be temporarily cemented until the remade bridege comes in from the lab. And tooth #7 was the tooth that was hurting and required the bite to be adjusted. I reported feeling pressure on the temporary bridge when drinking fluids, not pain in teeth # 8 and #9.

Yes, ***** has spoken with my Endontist about tooth #9 and #** (#8 has been extracted, gave wrong tooth # on my previous response.) My Endontist wants to wait until permanent bridge has been seated before doing the root canal on #**. I do not consider this matter closed.

      Business Response

******** was seen on 11/19/2024 at the McDonough office. At that visit she had her permanent bridge delivered. The patient was happy with the length and shade of the bridge and signed off on her esthetics approval consent form. The patient was told to follow up with the office after her evaluation of tooth #** at the Endodontist.

      Customer Answer

I am very pleased with my bridge. Will be returning for my appointment on December 2, 2024 to adjust the bite (no fault of the dental office.) Will follow up with the dental office regarding tooth #**.

I have been trying to get in for the last 6 months to a year. The office staff calls me today to tell me that they cant get me in until February. Im so upset with this office and the way they handle their patients. If they knew they didnt have space why wait till the days before to confirm an appointment. I will no longer refer people to come here and I will also be giving this business a bad review.

I have called almost every week for updates the office coordinator ignores my calls and no one ever returns your calls, after about 3 weeks which is considered the turn around time and email was sent to ************************** from the call center agent to inquire about my crown he them realize they NEVER even sent my images off so now that they just now realizing there mistake here I am entering another 3 weeks waiting period and still no crown, they still have ALL of my money, and they are STILL ignoring my calls. This office is very unprofessional and should not be in business.

My husband ( *************************) needed 1 crown. They had him come in 5 times to complete the procedure, only doing partial steps each time, instead of completing the crown in 1 or 2 appointments. They did this because they were scamming us for more money. They told us at each appointment that the total cost would be one amount, due that day, and there would be no further charges. They then added hundreds of charges, due the day of, for each new appointment. They would not let him in for the following appointments unless these hundreds of dollars were paid that day, they lied and told us they would not be charging us any further for the crown after those charges, but each time we came for the next appointment they added hundreds more dollars. They knew he could not walk around with half a crown completed so we would have to pay for him to be seen and complete more of the crown procedure, and they continuously lied and scammed us. They also would advise that this was the last part of the procedure and he would walk out that day with a completed crown, but in reality it wasnt until 5 appointments that this was true. After the final appointment we had paid so much money, been advised, for the 5th time, that there would be no more charges and that the insurance side was already completed (the same lies from all 5 appointments), but now sent another bill for $800 more dollars. I want to reiterate, that they charged us hundreds of dollars each appointment. Told us he could not start the appontment until it the new charges were paid, and that there would be 100% no more charges at the next appointment, but then, every single time, charged hundreds more. They continually call and harass him about this fake bill of charges they made up after, on multiple occasions, telling us there would be no further charges.

I went to McDonough Dentistry for an appointment on March 13, 2024. I was asked by the hygienist if I wanted fluoride and I told her that if it was completely covered by insurance and that if I did not have to pay out of pocket then it was fine. When I received the first bill for this I called and I was assured that someone would call back. But they did not I called again and the supervisor for billing took my call and once I told her what happened she said she would ask the hygienist if the bill could be removed. I told her that it should since I was lied to.I am still being billed for something I did not want to be billed for and was told would not cost me anything.

My complaint is for the business McDonough Center for Family Dentistry which is owned by North ********************** I had scheduled an appointment with them 2 months in advance with the oral surgeon for my wisdom teeth removal with sedation on Saturday 4/6/24 as I cannot go to the clinic during the weekdays and 1 week prior to my appointment, they changed my appointment to Friday 4/5 because the surgeon decided to not come and I reached out the office manager (*****************************) but never heard back from her, so I called North **************************** informed me & said ******** did email me & called me, which was a lie. The original cost for the treatment I was responsible for which should have included the sedation was $276.20 and I had paid partial amount. This situation was escalated to complaint *********** *** spoke to ***** & was informed by her that the sedation cost of $769 was not included in the treatment *** would had to pay on 4/6, if the appointment had not been changed. I requested a full refund for my inconvenience and being lied to by ********. ***** reached out to ****** ( treatment coordinator) for the surgeon ************** and said they cannot provide any assistance on the cost or any discount and I will be responsible for the cost. The business has done nothing but lie and cause inconvenience to me and have no empathy for the patient's life or schedule. And have not be helpful in anyway. The treatment coordinators need major improve in their job and the over all company. Companies like this that have no empathy for patients, when they deal with patient's lives should not exist. I have never encountered a business as this that have no desired or attempt to help the patients.

My wife, ******, had dental work done here in Sept of 2022. Insurance only covered a small portion of the procedure, so we paid ****** upfront BEFORE having the procedure done. We kept reconfirming MULTIPLE times to ensure that we would not be charged more and that the bill was final. We were assured that this would be the only amount we would have to pay. Approximately one month later, we received a bill for over 300 dollars due to a miscalculation on their part, we have refused to pay the bill for the past year due to the fictitious and fraudulent nature of the bill.

I thank you for the opportunity to respond to this concern. I will see if I am able to locate a chart for your wife and if so, I will have a billing review completed to make sure that all insurance payments have been made and posted correctly. This type of review generally takes 1-3 business days. Expect a followup response here, with any potential updates.

      Thank you.

McDonough Center for Family Dentistry refused to answer my question about the fees. I was told the root canal would cost $396.50 and I ended up paying $694. Two days before my appointment(after the cancellation period) I was told the fee would be $594 and I already paid $100 deposit so I asked if I would pay $494 and was told yes. When I got there she said I owed $594 leaving my total $694. I asked many times why the fee was not $396.50 the original amount and was told that the other woman gave me the wrong amount. I called the person who gave me the amount of $396.50 to ask about the increased fee and she never called me back, she said she never got the message. It was too late to cancel without losing my $100 deposit so I went to have the procedure. When I got there I again asked why the amount was so much higher and I got the same answer. So I thought I would have pay that amount wherever I went. I paid and had the procedure done. The next day I got a call from dentist for another reason but since I had them on the phone I told them about not getting a callback from the woman who gave me $396.50 amount. The receptionist asked the woman about not calling me back and the higher fee and the receptionist was told to let me know the fee was higher because **************** was not in my network. They should have told me that when asked many times why was the fee more but they didn't. I was told the doctor took my insurance, I don't know why she wasn't in network. If I was told she was not in network I would have never gone to her. Also, the customer service is terrible, I called many times and did not get my call returned. I finally got some who was supposed to help me and she tried to tell me the insurance company was wrong but it was not, the mistake is that I was not told the dentist was out of my network even though I asked many times about the fee. Finally, she said there was nothing she could do. I asked for the fee to be waived or get a credit but was told no.

      Good morning.

Thank you for the opportunity to respond to ****************** concerns.  Our team has worked with ****************** insurance company in an effort to resolve her concern. It has been determined that, based on her plan, her balance is correct. Her insurance company has advised our team that they DID pay IN network for the claim in question. And our team honored the in network rates.

If ************** still disputes the amount of the payment received, she should work with her insurance company to file an appeal. Furhermore, I have attached the signed treatment plan provided to ************** the month before the treatment in question. It indicates that this was an estimate and that any amount remaining unpaid would be her responsibility.

Our team will not be providing any adjustments or refunds at this time.

Businesses are under no obligation to seek BBB accreditation, and some businesses are not accredited because they have not sought BBB accreditation. BBB charges a fee for BBB Accreditation. This fee supports BBB's efforts to fulfill its mission of advancing marketplace trust.
