We received a quote for painting the entire inside of our new house. We felt it was more than we wanted to spend and continued to look for a better priced offer. She kept contacting us to make a deal and get the job. We finally decided to go with her due to the fact she claims she pays attention to the details. We signed a contract and agreed on a price. She took $5200 out of $5500 up front. She said she was a professional when it comes to removing the wallpaper, but then damaged the walls in 1 room and charged us an additional $100 to fix what she damaged. The original plan was fill the holes and sand, prep the walls, 1 coat of primer and then 2 coats of finishing paint. She changed the plan in the main living area on the main floor and called us requesting an additional $70 for the cost of the more expensive paint after the fact. There is no evidence of any sanding being done. There are spots in the painting that are messed up and you can see the primer. There is a hole in the master bedroom closet that wasn't there prior to her taking the job. She didn't finish painting the doors, the walls, the railing for the stairs, the trim in the laundry room, and more. When she called requesting the additional $70, we told her we couldn't afford the additional charge. She called the next morning wanting the rest of the money or a guarantee she will get the money still owed. She threatened to put a lean on the house. She stated she can't keep coming back to the house because she was starting another job that Monday. When we confronted her about it all and told her what still needed to be done on Sunday evening, she threw a fit and dropped the keys and stated she couldn't do this anymore and to keep the money because she was done. When we contacted her the next day, she stated she wasn't going to finish the job unless she got the rest of the money before. She was already given $5200 of the original $5500 but now $5600 due to the damage she did to the walls.Business Response

I met with ******************* and his fiance' initially on July 29, 2022 to walk through and discuss what work they wanted to get done in the home they just purchased. The quote that they received was not for painting the entire inside of their home as he stated. All of the ceilings on the first floor and the ceilings in one bedroom, and hallway downstairs were already painted by her brother. The original bid included the painting ceilings in bedroom, laundry room, and family room in basement area, ceiling by back sliding door in dining area on the main floor, walls in 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, living room up, family room down, kitchen, laundry area down, hallway down, stairwell going to basement, large closet in entryway, entryway , all closets in bedrooms, 1 bathroom closet, linen ************** floor, painting existing trim around windows, doors, baseboard and doors. The doors were taken off before I went into the home to discuss the job and the doors that were removed were present in the rooms that they were removed from and when things were covered in the family room in the basement to paint the ceiling we covered what was in that room to prevent paint from dripping on the furniture. Apparently there were doors leaning up against that and we were not made aware of until after the painting was complete. Filling nail holes and priming those areas, removing wallpaper in laundry room where they had already started removing the wallpaper and left a large mess that I had to clean up before I could go any further. Removing wall paper in a bedroom in the basement and when the wallpaper was removed it created areas where the glue was at the seams and it has to be skim coated, sanded and primed before it could be painted which I did let them know that would be an additional $100 because of the extra work that entailed. He agreed to pay that. When we were in the home working there was significant amount of staining from previous smoking in the home in the living area and and there had to be additional paint purchased to correct the issue that from the smoke stains in that area and when i spoke to ******************* on the phone he basically stated he was not going to pay for the additional paint because he had overdraft fees in his bank account and he didn't know how he would have bought his children lunch if he had them that week. At this point the $5200 was collected via credit card and and there was a fee assessed for using a credit card that he was aware of from the day he signed the contract on August 5, 2022. The total amount of the contract was originally $7475.00 and he said that he couldn't pay that so I gave him a 10% discount = $6727.00 and that would not include painting the garage ceiling and walls and purchasing the extra paint for that.....honestly I am a kind hearted person and he was telling me a sad story about how he couldn't afford it and he didn't have money for this and that so I agreed to $5500.00 and basically the garage was done for free and the extra paint I paid for myself to help them out. After I went down $1975.00 and did a large amount of work for free ******************* kept trying to take advantage of us by trying to get us to do work that was not being paid for in the contract. The amount that has been paid is $5017.85 which leaves an amount owing of $482.15 plus the $100.00 and the $70 for the extra paint. After him telling me about not having the money to feed his children if he had them that week I was very concerned that I would not get the rest of my money so I had called his girlfriend the next morning which I had had several conversations with and she was the one who called me originally. When I spoke to her I let her know that there was a balance due and it needed to be paid or I would have to put a mechanics lien on the property because it was not just me , my Sons worked with me for two solid weeks in this home and we even patched areas in the garage and painted the garage ceiling and all of the walls two coats of paint that I purchased and it was not even on the contract but we did that work to be kind and help them out in their time of need. After I spoke to his girlfriend he called me screaming at me at the top of his lungs accusing me of profiling him over and over and over and he had me so shook up I was in tears and my Son was with me and heard the whole conversation. I did not even know what that meant until I asked my Son after the whole frightening incident. After that incident I still had keys to the home and they were not moved in yet so I was going over there with my Son on a Sunday to finish the doors because I did not feel comfortable to go alone after the frightening incident on the phone. When we were there no one was there and I stopped after my Son had to leave to finish and they were there.....I went in and went downstairs to paint and he came down there and started shining a flashlight all around and just kept pointing out this and that and I was actually afraid to be there because I was alone at that time so when he went upstairs I walked upstairs where his girlfriend and him were at and laid the keys on the railing and said i'm done , I cant do this....I was in tears and I left. I have never had anyone that I have been so kind to and done work for ever treat me the way that he did. We did so much that was not even on the contract to help him and his family out. To address the hole in the master bedroom closet we did not remove any of the shelves or rods in any of the closets they were already taken apart and the doors were already off before we even arrived at the home to do any work. The hole had to have been there and was done when the closet shelf was removed. As far as threatening to put a lien on their home in which I have done work is totally incorrect because I, as a contractor have that legal right to do so if I am not paid for the work that has been completed. I was not threatening anyone I was stating my legal right if the money owed was not paid.
