I purchased four pairs of slippers at Overland.com on January 23, 2022. I was overcharged on taxes. The rate charged is *****%, the correct rate is 4.5%. I am not able to get a refund from Overland. In a first e-mail, Overland stated that the correct tax rate is *****%, the rate actually applied. In a second e-mail, Overland stated that the correct tax rate is 4.5% for my state and 2% for my county, but did not offer an explanation or refund for the extra *****% charged. In a third e-mail, Overland stated that the correct tax rate is 4.5% for ************, and 2% for ***** County, and that these rates are based on a report from Overland's IT department. According to the ** DOR, the correct tax rate for ************ is 4.5%, and for ***** County, 0%: https://apps.******/rv25taxmatch/main.aspx .

      Hello,

This is in response to Complaint ID ******** regarding tax issues for customer *************************. The refund has been processed for $9.12 back to the customers *****

Original order tax was calculated by the zip code that did not contain the +4-zip code extension. A recalculation of the tax with the added +4 extension resulted in a refund for the difference to the customer.

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:

      Hello,

below is a list of my concerns regarding Overland's response to my Complaint ******** about an overcharge in taxes:

Overland issued a refund in the incorrect amount, and sent me an e-mail blaming me for the overcharge.  I would like Overland to (1) refund the correct amount, and (2) take back the accusation that I caused the overcharge.

      First, the overcharge:

Overland originally charged *****% in taxes, and insisted that the correct tax rate is *****%, before declaring that the correct tax rate is 4.5% state plus 2.0% "city/county".  The actual tax rate is 4.5% state and 0.0% local. Overland issued a refund for an overcharge of 2.0%, but the actual overcharge was *****%.  The overcharge consists of the *****% that were never explained, and the 2.0% "city/county" tax that Overland incorrectly insisted apply to my address.

      Second, the blame:

In an e-mail to me explaining the refund, Overland asserts that I did not provide enough information to allow Overland to calculate the tax correctly.  In particular, Overland argues that I gave Piedmont as my city (correctly so, per **** rules), that Piedmont imposes a city tax of 2.0%, and that, therefore, if I wanted to benefit from the 0.0% tax rate at my particular street address, I needed to provide the four digit extension to my zip code.

I believe it is up to the merchant to gather the information needed to calculate the tax correctly.  I provided all the information requested by Overland, and, in fact, that information is more than sufficient to ascertain the correct tax rate.  I did not cause Overland to overcharge me.  Not only that, I wrote to Overland three times regarding this issue, giving Overland plenty of opportunity to doublecheck the tax rate, but each time, I was told that there was no overcharge and that instead the issue stems from "confusion" on my part.

      Thank you for your help.

The correct refund amount is $9.14, $456.00 sales price times *****% overcharge rate.

      Thank you.

      Sincerely,

      *************************
