We purchased a casket for my husband through our funeral home and they went through Homesteaders Life. The casket was $5000 and some. I always pay more than the total amount and always paid on time. When I got a refund of over $500 I was told I could not make extra payments towards the principal because the 1 year was up. I keep accurate records and the price of the casket was paid in full just this past month (June 2024).I called homesteaders to ask why am I still getting bills? She said I have 1 more year I have to keep paying. What? Even though the casket was bought I have to keep paying for it?She said I could pay the payoff amount. It was $1925 PLUS $79 fee. So our $5000+ casket cost us $2000 more than the agreed upon amount!OUTRAGEOUS!!!Dont put money into this company. We were never told about the extra amount, only that if we couldnt pay the full amount in the first year we would have 3 years to pay the amount off. No one told us about the extra $2000.We will NEVER do business with this company again.Buyer Beware!

I went with my Mom to set up her funeral arrangements with the funeral home that uses Homesteaders life company for pre-arranged funerals. She fell behind in her payments but was otherwise able to get it caught up. These people send her a check back for the amount she had paid into the policy. I asked them why did they send the check back? They said they didn't get the full amount to re-open her policy. I find the company not very nice to work with. They said they could not hold any money.Homesteaders Life Company

Horrible. I was doing my due diligence as a single person and opened a prepaid funeral policy. I've paid said policy off in full in 8 months. Only to be told that there's a $553.23 interest and early payoff fee. What a scam. I received a letter stating once I overpaid on my very second payment that that money would not apply and would only be added towards the loan at the end explain to me how this is not a scam? Not applying additional money and holding it to not to go towards the principal.Homesteaders Life Company

I am not sure yet. I contacted them after paying into a pre-need policy for over a year and a half, and informed them that I was in financial distress and needed to surrender this policy. I am awaiting surrender papers. The representative that I spoke with told me that I would get $475 or so dollars in a check back after I sign and send in the surrender papers. I have received my surrender paperwork to Homesteaders Life Ins, and it should be in their possession no later than 11/25/22. I was told that I would get a check for approx 470.00 if I followed there instructions. Today, 11/21/22 I get a letter in the mail telling me that my payment due on 10/02/22 has not been received. I know that, and that is why I surrendered the policy. Now they are saying that my protection has been reduced to $920.00 . What is this? I am expecting you all to honor what I was told that I would get in a check refund. I have paid $100.00 a month for over 1.5 years. I am expecting some of my money backL. M.

I give Homesteaders Life 5 stars. They honored their word and sent me a decent amount of my money back. I am completely satisfied with this experience. Some money beats no money.Review fromBob B

1 starBe very cautious about putting money with this company. They've had our money for two years and our return is barely one percent/year. For a whole life policy, that is terrible. We were under the impression that investing with this company would enable our initial deposit to keep pace with inflation. That has not happened.
