Horizon Credit Unions ******a-Payment" promotion is marketed as a way to "free up cash for the holidays," but it is riddled with hidden costs and manipulative practices that take advantage of borrowers. The cheerful language masks a program designed to make borrowers pay more interest, extend their loan term, and incur hidden fees.Hidden Costs 1. Accrued Interest: Skipping a payment on a $10,000 loan at 6.99% APR adds $58.25 in interest for that month alone. This extra cost compounds over time, significantly increasing the total repayment.2. Extended Loan Term: The skipped payment gets pushed to the end of the loan, meaning borrowers remain in debt longer, paying even more interest. This crucial detail is not explained upfront.3. Hidden $35 Fee: Participation in this program incurs a $35 feea detail buried in the fine print and absent from the promotional email.Manipulative Tactics Horizons email exploits the financial stress of the holidays, offering what seems like relief but is actually a costly trap. They use feel-good language like "free up cash" while failing to disclose the financial consequences, making this program a predatory scheme that targets vulnerable ************** to Action Horizon Credit Union must: - Clearly disclose costs in all promotional materials. - Eliminate the unjustified $35 fee. - Stop using misleading language to manipulate *************** Thoughts This program is not a holiday giftits a financial burden. Borrowers beware: Horizon Credit Unions ******a-Payment" offer is designed to benefit them, not you.Horizon Credit Union

Horizon Credit Union is committed to clear communication with our members and the public. We regret hearing about Mr. ***** frustration with our *****A-Pay offer and would like to clarify several points.
The *****A-Pay offer is entirely optional and widely appreciated by our borrowers. The fee is clearly disclosed in the promotional email, both as a bullet point in the primary text and in the disclosure at the bottom. The same layout is used on our website at *********************.
Regarding the extended loan term, full contract details are provided at the time of application. While impractical to include all contract terms in a single advertisement for most financial products, the details about interest accrual and loan extensions for our *****A-Pay offer are presented to the borrower before they agree to the terms or pay the fee. This is in accordance with regulation and common place for financial products.
Additionally, the *****A-Pay offer is limited to one skipped payment per year and excludes certain loans to prevent overextension. We trust our members to review the offer carefully and are happy to assist them
with any questions, especially regarding cost. This popular annual offer helps our members, especially during the holiday season, by providing financial flexibility. Horizon Credit Union is dedicated to putting our members first, ensuring our offers are clear, transparent, and beneficial.Review fromJeff M

Very ********* I have a truck loan for a 2017 RAM. In October 2023 the motor blew out with 123k miles by a known manufacturer issue, but RAM wouldnt cover it I asked the bank for a couple months of forbearance as without a truck I couldnt work. They told me no. I asked to refinance to help cover the $20k motor. I was told no. I asked if there was anything they could do. They said no, too bad. So then I have to rent a truck to be able to work which was an additional $1,500/mo. On top of all of that, I got threatening letters from them saying my truck insurance was not good enough because of a high deductible. They forced me to have a premium insurance costing $200+ a month for a truck that cannot drive and has no motor and if I didnt have that premium insurance they were going to add on $7,000 to the cost of my loan! They claim to be a good community credit union to help local people out and offer better services but they are farm from that! Instead of helping me they forced me to pay thousands in extra charges and threatened my credit and to charge me more if I didnt pay for a higher insurance on a vehicle that has been sitting at the dealer for 11 months! My family does not make enough to be able to eat $40k that I have had to pay extra by receiving ZERO help from Horizon.Horizon Credit Union

Worst bank ever! The reps are rude and dont have any compassion if you have to deal with a family members estate. I have sent all of the paperwork to the branch and to corporate and every time I call, nobody knows what Im talking about and wont share any information with me. This has been going on for months. How many times do I have to send in the documentation?! They never have anything together and seem confused every time I encounter an employee here. I am glad I dont bank with them! The lady in the mortgage department is incredibly rude and unhelpful. You need to train your people better, this is a customer service job. Part of that role is to HELP the people that contact you! I do not bank here but my brother who passed away did. I would love nothing more than to not deal with these clowns. Go somewhere else if you want a good bank!Horizon Credit Union

This company is absolutely evil. We purchased a toy hauler when I was working I contacted ***** and then got long-haul Covid which changed my life. I am disabled. I have brain fog. I fall asleep when I least expect it. I am unable to work. I have horrible, horrible muscle pains, we got two months behind on our payments to them and I had already started a hardship application with this company. I had to go through all of our financial information and give it to them. They dropped the ball and the next thing I know the repo man is here taking our toy hauler after I offered him what my I had not to take it he was intimidating he took it and the next thing you know we receive letters that we are being ***d for an additional ****** some dollars for money that they didnt get because we didnt finish the contract with them. I have children to feed have mortgage. We have bills I did not hide from them. I notify them of our hardship and they dont care they are disgusting people they hire attorneys ************************ who works with *********, ******, ******************* In *******, ********** to *** us after they sold the toy hauler under fair market value anyhow, they called us for a hearing for Motion of summary judgment and obviously we are unable to pay $15,000 to them after attorney fees if I cannot make the $333 month And after we were just behind two months, and I had notified them of this come up with Dollars in a month or 14 days I wrote letters to the attorneys, D*** and ****, pleading our case not to go to trial and explained our situation that I was disabled. I have already been devastated by the fact that I lost my job. but to top it off they had to go ahead and *** us after I sent them emails with photos of our family showing that we are real people and what they are doing has ruined us financially emotionally. So yesterday the first garnishment of my husbands wages took place and we now have no money to pay our mortgage so my husband $3000 check we got $800.Horizon Credit Union

Neither my husband, nor myself have heard anything from your company in response to this complaint so you are more than welcome to call us and let us know your reply since you are such an upstanding company and are not going to put it out there on the Internet. You do have our number as you repeatedly contacted us and took us to court twice so a phone call would be appreciated sincerely,Review fromNANCY B

I am a woman in my 50's who had good credit. I bought a new car in June of 2022 at Lithia and my credit application sent me through Horizon Credit Union. We have two homes and had the car registered at one but our mailing address is the other. Horizon sent all the information to the non mailing address and this resulted in our 1st payment being late. Even though they had my other address and email - there was no notification of this. I got a phone call and I went to my local branch and made the payment and set up autopay. There was a problem where they didn't think I had insurance so I had USAA send the information and even made extra on the payment so there wouldn't be a problem while that was sorted out.We bank with a small local bank. If there is ever a problem, a fee, or anything goes into overdraft we get a letter immediately with their logo on the envelope and our names in capital letters. I'm not allowed a lot of characters here so - long story short. I come to find out that they have been reporting me as "late" every month and charging me $10 - which is now $180. We have not received a single notification of this. In fact, going to the branch and talking to the call center - no one could figure out why this was happening because they could only see on time payments and then fees. You can't directly contact the collections department who are apparently the only holders of this information. The guy calls me a few hours after the call center sends a request. Apparently they have been trying to reach me by phone (you know the calls where you answer and there is dead air). They never resolved the insurance issue so they charged me an outrageous fee that they never notified me of and have been charging me a $10 a month late fee which they have not notified me of. The guy literally said to me "The problem is, you set up autopay".Now I can't buy the house that just came up for sale that is directly through my sons backyard event though my income, equity, etcHorizon Credit Union

Thank you for allowing Horizon to respond to the complaint of ********************
************ purchased a 2022 **** Escape Hybrid from ********************************** on May 31, 2022, on a retail installment sales agreement (Agreement). On the same day, the Agreement was assigned to Horizon and ************ became a member of Horizon Credit Union. ************ provided the address of ************************************************************************************************* on the Agreement, her auto title application, and her signature card with Horizon.
************ later provided Horizon with an address of *************************************************************************** with an Address/Contact Change Request. (See attached). All initial contacts with ************ were at the ************************************* address since until August 30, 2022. Horizon was possessed of no other address prior to August 30, 2022.
Also on August 30, 2022, Horizon attempted to send a late notice to ************ at the ***************** ***** Road address. The collection letter was generated automatically on August 30, 2022 but Horizon recently discovered ************ did not receive this single letter. ************ did, though, receive all other communications from Horizon via email and phone.
Horizon is not aware of which address ************ considers a mailing address versus a non-mailing address. Horizon contacted ************ at ***************** ***** Road before August 30, 2022, and at ******** Drive after August 30, 2022.
************, as a part of her loan agreement, promised to insure the collateral (2022 **** Escape Hybrid). (See the attached welcome letter stating Ms. ***** insurance obligations). But by July 26, 2022, ************ still had not provided Horizon with proof of insurance on the collateral. (See Notice One). On August 23, 2022, Horizon sent a final notice that the collateral was still not insured. (See Final Notice). Remember, these notices were sent appropriately to the ***************** ***** Road address because ************ had not yet provided the ******** address in ********
until August 30, 2022. Ms. ***** loan payments increase to $665.97 to pay for insurance forced placed on the collateral. (See attached Notice).
Even though ************ payments increased on her loan because of the forced placed insurance, her direct deposits continued to be the original payment of $612.62, thus creating several late payments and late payment charges. Horizon attempted to contact ************ on numerous occasions only to be told by ************ that she purposely ignores calls and keeps her voicemail full to avoid unwanted messages. Her telephone messaging system was constantly in overload status and Horizon was unable to leave messages. ************ additionally never responded to any of Horizons email communications regarding the wrong payment amount after the insurance was forced placed on the collateral.
As to Ms. ***** late payments, Horizons records show that Ms. ***** first payment was due on July 14, 2022 and the 14th day of the month each day thereafter. Horizon received Ms. ***** first payment on August 31, 2022. And I reported ************ 30 days late to the credit reporting agencies, as was appropriate. And as we indicated Ms. ***** payments continued to be the wrong amount and late because of the forced placed insurance.
As to Ms. ***** statement that she was told her account was current, *********************** records have always shown her account with late payments and late charges. (See attached payment history)
If you have further questions, please let us know and again thank you for this opportunity to correct any misunderstandings.
Signed,
*************************

1 starOne star is appropriate for this review. Some of the representatives were helpful, but the overall experience is/was unfavorable and is not something I would recommend to ANY of my friends or family. They have double standards. Contracts are apparently only to be followed by the consumer, not HZCU. They make communication darn near impossible unless it benefits them. (They lie and tell that they left voicemails and sent emails when they have not.) The finance department has one of the rudest people that I have ever dealt with. Make sure you read your contracts! Representatives will promise and give you information that they are not able to act on. (The representatives do not know the rules or correct information to share.) HZCU in *****, ** is definitely a business that should be revamped and purged of the nasty people who work there. If you think about doing business with this company, please be warned that they have an unfavorable rating for a reason.Review fromRebecca H
