I went into Champaign Beauty Supply at the end of July 2022 to buy a hair straightener. I wanted to support a local business, and I talked to the owner briefly to ensure that if the product malfunctioned, I could return it. The owner reassured me that the item could be returned if it didn't work properly. I bought three items total, two small hair conditioner packets at $1.99 each, and one hair straightener for about $32. Upon bringing the straightener home and using it, there was a burnt plastic smell that the device made while working that seemed like it could possibly be a fire hazard. I used the item but it also did not really work on my hair and basically didn't do what it advertised. I decided to return the straightener. Then, when I looked at my receipt, I noticed I was upcharged by a $1 for both packets of conditioner. I went to the store and explained what happened with the items. He plugged in the straightener and said that it worked despite there being a strong smoke/burnt plastic odor emanating from it. He said he would not give my money back except as store credit. I would have accepted that if the whole interaction had not been incredibly dishonest, by telling me I could return the item if it didn't work and overcharging me on the other items. I left the items with the owner and didn't know what to do, so I called ******* *** explaining the situation but they took his side. They said that according to him, he did not accept the return so they are not liable. I don't have supporting documentation because I have just moved out of state recently, and do not have my receipt. However I can show a bank statement if necessary and have someone else corroborate my story regarding the item not working. If you could please reach out to the owner, it would be much appreciated.
