I contacted Kansas Legal Services (KLS) more than a year ago to obtain needed legal services. During two or three phone conversations, I was advised by a representative of KLS that I qualified for services and that KLS would provide the services requested. The representative advised that a supervisor had affirmed my qualifications for services and KLS's commitment to provide those services. I submitted the documentation necessary to initiate the service process. I waited a couple months. Then, when I again contacted KLS, I learned the representative was no longer with KLS and that KLS would not provide the service promised. Instead, KLS offered a lite version of the promised service; i.e., they would answer a few questions related to my issue, though not the central questions to which KLS had earlier agreed. I appealed the decision and my appeal was denied. I requested information pursuant to filing a grievance (KLS has a formal grievance process); KLS did not respond to multiple requests for this information. This recounting of events is to the best of my knowledge. In responding to my appeal of their actions, KLS did not dispute what I view to be the essential elements of our process. I desire that KLS either provide the services promised or, provide alternate counsel, whether pro bono, or at their expense, to provide the service agreed to. In my judgment, KLS provides needed services to persons in need. Nonetheless, I believe they should do what they promise. While this issue began in 2021, I attempted to resolve the issue on my own thru May of 2022.
