We were currently leasing a VW Tiguan and after having another child we decided we wanted to up grade to a VW Atlas. The dealership offered to pay off our lease and give us an additional $4000.00 towards a down payment. We jumped at the opportunity, excited to see that we had some equity in a lease. We put an additional sum of money towards the down payment to get our payments were we wanted them. The sales women we dealt with was pleasant. We are military and have no support system in the area so we were at the dealership with our 2 young children for hours on a Saturday and our sales women was very accommodating and helpful. We met with the finance manager to sign our contract. Right off the bat he was not pleasant and made a pathetic attempt to be personable. I felt like we were inconveniencing this man because it was late on a Saturday. After I neglected to purchase the extended warranty his weak attempt at being friendly ended. At that point he became very short with me and hurried through the rest of the paperwork. None of this bothered me because we were happy with the new vehicle and besides his lack of personality it was a good experience overall. Two weeks later I received a phone call from the finance manager. He stated that their computer system made an error and it gave me a tax credit that I should have not received. He told me that I needed to pay an additional $2000.00. He was very nonchalant as if this was no big deal. Obviously I was furious. He was completely unapologetic and kept blaming the computer system. He never took ownership for the error which ultimately was his fault. I could've respected that if he owned up to the mistake. He wanted me to just give him the sum in full via a credit card over the phone. I told him no way. There was no way I was doing anything without it in writing. He tried to bully me and accused me of not wanting to pay my taxes. After that I told him I need to speak to the next level up. The finance director called me and was a little more apologetic and understanding. However, he ultimately tried the same thing and tried to get me to give him my credit card number over the phone and pay the additional $2000. I told him I would call him back and the was the last time I spoke with any of them. What they were doing was wrong in every aspect. Trying to get me to give them more money over the phone outside of what our signed contract agreement was. Luckily I am military and have free legal representation. After a military JAG officer spoke to the finance director they decided it was in their best interest to eat the cost and they ultimately paid for their mistake. This was the worst experience I have ever had purchasing a vehicle and I felt like I was dealing with mobsters. Luckily I stuck to my guns and sought out legal guidance. I'm sure this not the first time they treated people like this. I would advise any future costumes to not do anything unless it is in writing and don't let them manipulate you. They don't deserve any stars.

    BMW VW of Topeka Response

    10/14/2021

The staff of VW of Topeka, and the management staff of the ********************** would like to formally apologize for your experience. You obviously, by your selection of vehicles, are loyal VW owners and this transaction should have been another building block in that loyalty.
The sales process sounds like it was really great, your salesperson was both attentive to your needs but also your families. I can't unfortunately tell you why the finance manager was not welcoming and excited to have not only had you find the car you wanted but also you had remained in the VW family. I have addressed this with General Manager of the dealership as well as the Finance Director of the Auto Group. While you might not be a customer in the future, we sincerely hope you are, we can at least try to make sure that attitude does not resurface.
Now for the multitude of communication mistakes that happened when we found the miscalculation of sales tax. When we called you the first time, it should have been to tell you we found this problem and ASKED you if you would consider paying the amount of the error. If you asked for something in writing to consider the payment, he should of asked you what and if email was ok to communicate the issue with you.
The Finance Director, following up, which is the normal process should has ASKED you to assist. And whey you said you would call back he did what was right and waited. The sad part of this is that when you didn't call back he didn't just call you and leave a message telling you the General Manager had decided to drop the entire request, our error, our cost. If he would have done that, left that message, you would not of had to call the JAG and it would have removed the idea that we were acting in a less than appropriate way.
Again you have our sincerest apology, and hopefully you will give your salesperson a chance to continue your relationship with VW. If you have any question or want to discuss this further please do not hesitate to call me direct: Robert *********************
