I hired Spencer Remodeling to replace wood support posts for our back patio with solid aluminum square, flat surface load bearing supports. He required a non-refundable deposit of $1650. When he showed up, he had a snap around fluted surface aluminum column system, that I told him was not what we had agreed on and appeared inadequate to hold the weight. He agreed but said it was all that was available. Since I had already committed $1650 that I didn't want to lose, we agreed to put 4x4 supports in and use the aluminum as a wrap only. This cost extra money from original design. Mr. Spencer wanted to install the wood support posts without securing them in at top and bottom. He said securing them not needed, the weight of the roof would hold them in place. I argued (and checked with a home builder and internet) and he agreed to secure them at added cost. Also, since the aluminum wrap surface was fluted, I needed to now replace two other flat surface existing columns near house that we had planned to leave. This was of course at also at added cost. These columns had electrical switches on them so electrical work was now required. The results of the electrical work were: a. The conduit covering the wire from the column was short and does not cover the romex wire into the support column. The wire is exposed and visible. b. The switches on the second column are not installed in the center of the column with part of the switch cover extending past the edge of the column. After installing Mr. Spencer painted the high gloss powder coated columns without any surface preparation. When I questioned, he said Sherwin Williams said it was okay. The result was the paint applied did not adhere and would scratch off easily. Mr. Spencer agreed to refund me $300 to cover my paint removal. When I received the check it came with a letter saying if I cashed the check I voided any warranty for any of the work and could not voice any complaint publicly.
