On January 5th, 2024, I had an appointment set up with Eldersburg Veterinary Hospital, our family vet for our dogs. This appointment was for stray cats on my small farm that were left by the previous owners. I had called the vet and let them know the visit was just to get the cats a rabies vaccine so that they would not get my other animals sick. I had a long conversation about the cats and how they were strays, and they put in their system that all I was looking for was the rabies shot for the cats. When they called to confirm a few days before the appointment, I again reminded them that the appointment was only for the rabies shot, and they said they understood. On the 5th, I had an emergency and couldn’t take the cats, so I had my 19 year old son run them in, which I have had done before for my dogs. I told him they were aware that the cats were just getting the standard rabies vaccine. When my son went to the office, he also mentioned to the vet that all they were supposed to get was the rabies vaccine. He then let the vet do what he thought went with the standard for my request. The vet, without discussing it with me, chose instead to perform full and complete tests for a new animal at their office without getting prior approval from me for the changes, instead relying on my son to make those decisions. In spite of the knowledge that I had requested no less than 3 times, the rabies shot alone. My son thinking this was what I had asked for, didn't know to say no because he believed this was what was previously discussed. At the end of the appointment, a small vaccine that should've cost less than $200 wound up costing our family $700 as they threw on all these additional things. I called and asked for a reconsideration of the bill, but they denied it even after they admitted to me and my husband that their receptionist failed to tell the vet my request and dropped the ball. They blamed my son for not knowing enough to say no.

I will never go back to Eldersburg Vet. I had such a horrible experience. There are two stray cats that hang around my farm, and I only wanted rabies shots for them, in order to protect my other animals. My wife called to set up the appt for the rabies shots. The front desk was told on two different occasions (the initial appt schedule and when they called back to confirm the appt) that we ONLY wanted the rabies shots. We sent our 19 year old son to take the strays in. He called us after the appt to tell us they charged us over $700 for other stuff we did not ask for. He said he was never asked about anything, that the tech and vet took the cats and "did stuff" and came back at the end of the appt. I was extremely upset and called them. I told them we were very specific in our request for only the rabies shot. The front desk person told us that "they don't communicate those things to the vets." What office doesn't communicate with their other staff? When my wife spoke to the vet, they got very nasty with her and tried to blame everything on us. I don't think I can put into words how it feels to be taken advantage of like this, and then to have the staff try to put the blame on us.
