I was charged for multiple months without receiving any tutoring sessions. Tutors frequently canceled, and I was not offered rescheduled sessions or refunds.I later discovered that Varsity Tutors had an undisclosed use it or lose it policy, meaning if I did not use the sessions within the month, I lost my money with no credit or refund ********* no point was this policy clearly explained when I signed up for the monthly plan.2.Failure to Notify or Obtain My Consent I was out of the country for four months, during which I did not use a single tutoring session. Despite this, Varsity Tutors continued to charge me every month without my consent or notification.A reputable company should confirm continued billing if no services are being used, especially in a long-term absence.3.False Promises of Refunds When I first contacted Varsity Tutors regarding these unauthorized charges, I was assured that I would receive a refund. However, I later received an email falsely claiming that I had never officially canceled my sessions and therefore would not be eligible for any refund. This blatant contradiction between what I was told over the phone and what was later stated in writing is deceptive and unacceptable. I appreciate the Better Business Bureaus commitment to consumer rights and ethical business practices. Please confirm receipt of this complaint and inform me of the next steps in addressing this issue.Business Response

Awful. My experience has been horrible, from day one I was unable to fully use the services with my son. Day one I spent over an hour trying to get the service to work online, we had no audio (the problem wasnt on my end but theirs) that same night I was assigned a new tutor for my son and he had a very thick African accent that was not easy to understand, in the third day the tutor had no idea what he was doing and gave my son the wrong answers and confused him more. When I tried to get a refund I was talked into not cancelling the service and they gave me one more month for free (I already made up my mind I was not going to use them anymore) Ive explained to varsity tutors that I was not happy and wanted a refund of my $314 because I didnt use the services they promised Id be receiving, they refunded me only half of the $314 and refuse to refund it all, no one will talk to me and tell me why they believe I shouldnt receive all of my money and instead emailed me twice to tell me one that Im only getting half and second that theyre not paying the other half because of terms they say I agreed to ( Although I didnt use the services) I would not recommend Varsity Tutors to anyone. I believed they were a reputable company to trust with my sons tutoring but I was wrong and far from being correct. I shouldve read the online reviews before signing up because I wouldve known of their business practices and ran the other way.Business Response

I have been calling the membership services of Varsity Tutors to cancel my membership and for every time I call them the phone gets answered then I get hung up on after a few seconds. I have also emailed them as well. The phone call service is open from 8am to 10pm ET, and I have called in the afternoon, the morning, and at night and have been met with the same response.Business Response

Varsity Tutors is a scam. They use hard sell sales tactics to take advantage of people. They promised me a tutor that they did not have. I never even logged into the site, no one contacted me about the tutoring and they refused to give me a refund. They are going to take my $349.00 and give me nothing in return. How is that okay??Business Response

I signed up for Varsity Tutors for a one month plan on 31 DEC 2024 at the price of $568.80 after being informed that it would be only for one month so I could try it out to see if would be a good fit for me, and if I wanted to renew, then I could call back and renew for another month. I went through the tutoring for the month and didnt get a lot of satisfaction from the service, so I decided not to renew. On 30 JAN 2025, I was unexpectedly charged again for $674.13. After realizing this, I called Varsity Tutors back to explain I was charged incorrectly, and after doing so, the representative said I was signed up for a subscription and needed to cancel it. I asked to cancel it immediately and to please refund the extra month of tutoring that I would not be using. I was transferred to another representative who made answer a bunch of questions about why I would want to cancel, and tried to pressure me to continue with their program, and after declining multiple times, the representative said that they would put a cancellation and refund request in for me and I should hear back in a couple days. 04 FEB 2025, I received an email confirming the cancellation had been processed and received an email on 05 FEB 2025 rejecting the refund request. I emailed back explaining my side and how I was instructed I wouldnt be charged for another month but was anyway. However, despite multiple emails and phone calls to Varsity Tutors, no one would ever let me speak to a manager or talk to anyone who could help me resolve this transaction. Four different times a representative promised me that a manager or someone from customer care would call me back within 48 hours to talk this through with me, but the call never came. I have the emails I sent/received, the receipts, and one of the phone calls recorded as evidence of these affairs.Business Response

Varsity Tutors charged me for a full month worth of lessons without my consent and refused to issue me a refund. They said I had to cancel by a certain date otherwise I was liable for full months charge but failed to tell me that. None of the hours were used for the extra month they charged me for. I told the sales representative in a email and verbally when I signed up exactly when I needed the tutoring to start and finish and what date my sons and daughters test were (SAT on March 8) that they needed to prepare for. She never told me about the date I needed to cancel by. I escalated the claim to a manager but they still refused to issue me a refund. When I try to view the terms of my account, I get the below attached error message.Customer Answer

Company charged me for tutoring services not provided and not requested. I received from Varsity Tutoring e-mail messages on all actions except when Varsity made automatic pay deductions. Varsity Tutors claimed no refunds for tutoring, which is understandable if services are provided in good faith. But with me there were charges from November 2023 to March 2024 and from August 2024 to March 2025 and the amounts were different - with no explanation.Customer Answer

I have reviewed the business' response and am rejecting it because: There has been no satisfactorily resolution of this complaint. Whoever contacted **** ****** provided false information. On March 9, 2025, Varsity sent a Release for $2,236.00 when $8,315.13 was owed and I declined that since Varsity owed much more in reimbursement.

The company charged my bank account 500$ and they are refusing to give me a refund even though I have not used any of their services for the money that was drawn from my account. They fail to tell you that it is a recurring payment and if they do tell you it is in the fine print. The overall experience was not adequate either. I paid 500$ for a tutor that was supposed to be a subject matter expert. I got a tutor that was using Chegg and AI to solve my problems and this is fraudulent in my opinion. The tutor was sub-par and I would like a refund for the hours of tutoring that are not going to be used.Business Response

DO NOT SIGN UP FOR VARSITY TUTORS YOU WILL GET SCAMMED. I am a Mechanical Engineering student at ****** that really needed help in his classes. When I first called with varsity tutors, they made it seem like they were so professional and their cancellation policy was easy, and they never mentioned that it would renew automatically (I see a lot of people complaining about this same issue by the way). The tutors were so unqualified. I had a meeting with the first one and he spent an hour trying to solve an intro exercise. The second one told me he had no idea what this material was, which is respectable but still... they're matching me with people that have no idea of the content of my course in which I need help. And I stopped trying at the third attempt. They refused to give me a refund.Business Response
