My surgery was cancelled by Dr *********** for reasons shared with everyone in OrthoCarolina but me as the patientnon-pre payment of surgeons fees and because I was under investigation for Breast Cancer. I was not told by Dr *********** or his surgery scheduler after arranging not to return to work until April 7 2025. This is abusive. I have never been required to pay before services rendered. I am reporting this issue higher as I am greatly inconvenienced.OrthoCarolina

OrthoCarolina requires half of the surgery deposit before the surgical procedure. The surgery may be rescheduled when you can pay for the services. Thank you!Stephanye Bauer

I was advised to purchase a Rebound Air ****** boot in November 2024 and did so. I had to sign a blank check saying I was responsible for all charges not covered by insurance before my appointment without being provided an estimate of costs or what insurance would cover. The cost of the boot alone was $332, for which my insurance did not cover any costs (obviously not OrthoCarolina fault). My issue is the same boot is sold on ****** for $79.99. OrthoCarolina wasn't interested in reducing costs after discussing through their online messaging system. Pretty sad that we can't trust medical providers to provide fair pricing (unless of course a 315%+ profit margin on equipment seems fair).OrthoCarolina

OrthoCarolina follows government guidelines regarding the pricing of durable medical equipment. On 11/6/2024, you signed a consent form stating that you were responsible for the medical expenses regardless of insurance coverage. The consent form also said that if you were not satisfied with the equipment, returns would be accepted within 7 days of purchase. Please call the OrthoCarolina Careline for additional questions. ************J. N.

I am in agreement with the process stated above. To re-state: 1) consent form signed 2) services/equipment provided 3) 30+ days after: bill delivered (i.e. completely unknown what cost and/or insurance coverage is until this time)I would be happy to return the equipment which was barely used at this point for a full refund. It would be impossible for a customer to make a decision to return the equipment based upon price, or be aware of OrthoCarolina's price gouging process, until after the 7-day refund period. I don't have any questions for OrthoCarolina. I asked for a price reduction which was denied. Should OrthoCarolina change their mind about their original position, I would be happy to drop this complaint.Review fromAndrew I

I had a clavicle surgery done back in 2021. Ive had nerve pain continuing since then. Ive had several appointment appointments with them. Theyve never been able to diagnose me correctly. Finally, with the Duke, Ive had one surgery there and now Im probably gonna have another one scheduled. I feel that for complex issues with the Carolina just seems to be out of their depth. They also let me go as their patient which I thought was very hostile. I just find their they have a culture of not really caring.OrthoCarolina

Went to their urgent care and they wouldn't even see me, it was 15 mins before closing.. Sorry I couldn't control when I cut my leg. I had to go to the ** and wait for 5 hours and was billed over $4000 when I could have avoided all that unneeded headache.OrthoCarolina

OrthoCarolina does not treat cuts and perform stitches repair. The ** was the best place to treat your recent injury. I am sorry you were not given this information at the urgent care. I hope your recovery goes well.Review fromLyn F

The billing system for OrthoCarolina is the worst that I've ever dealt with. The customer service agents are nice, but I keep getting billed for PT visits that I've already paid for. I ensured that all of my bills, payments and insurance adjustments were 100% correct from May to July (2024), but every time I go in for a visit, they tell me that I have an outstanding balance. One time, I was told that I won't be able to do my physical therapy until I pay my previous balance. When I called the office the next day, I was told that I don't have an outstanding balance. There seems to be a major disconnect between the billing department and the actual facility.OrthoCarolina

The Account Support Manager of OrthoCarolina reviewed the bill and explained that Ms. ****** owed the balance. The manager asked Ms. ****** to review the **** Federal explanation of benefits that matched Evolent for comparison. The surgical implant charges were applied to her deductible or co-insurance. Please contact the business office at ************ if you have any additional questions.Review fromPhyllis S

I am very disappointed in the billing department. My doctor visit was on January 7, 2022 and just I recently received a text that I owed $132.29 on May 29, 2024. I questioned the representative when I phoned the billing department today on June 6, 2024 about WHY it has taken over TWO years to bill me. I do have two insurances and the representative said they were waiting to hear from my secondary insurance. I am shocked that OrthoCarolina did not bill me in ******************************************************************************** their customer service. When I repeatedly questioned the representative about the delay, she kept saying she was sorry for the delay. I paid the balance. My issue is the severe DELAY in communicating that I had a balance. I still want to know why it took over TWO years to inform me. I am not paying a bill UNTIL I receive an invoice. I never received an invoice. I paid my full balance today because I am a honest person with integrity. My issue is why is there a TWO year delay in communicating with me. I have mailed a letter to the Atlanta billing depart and to the Charlotte office.OrthoCarolina

Thank you for sharing your concern with the BBB. OrthoCarolina purchased a new practice management system a few years ago. There was a delay with patients receiving their statements from 2022. We apologize for your inconvenience and lack of communication from our office. We appreciate your payment and understanding of the billing delays.Review fromIvana M

I had my second spinal surgery with ************** on 12.21.2023 because I never got relief from the first one I had in 2022. Not even a month after the surgery my muscles tore off my spine and left my spine only covered by my skin. Unfortunately I had moved out of state during this time and contacted **************** office who did not take me seriously as they thought I was only seeking pain medication. I ended up going to a local ER who took some CT scans and discharged me as I wasnt in any immediate danger. 3days later I flew back to Charlotte to see ************** who encouraged me to take my collar off and said that there was nothing wrong with my muscles, that I was only experiencing some minor swelling. Luckily I followed my gut instinct and found a surgeon within my local area. I ended up having to have 2 more surgeries to fix what ***** never did and negelected to address after my muscle tear. I was in excruciating pain the entire time and the only thing his team and PA could do was criticise my request for pain medicine, not realizing the damage and neglect OrthoCarolina caused. I would definitely NEVER recommend them to anyone as they are there to solely take your money and dont really care if they ever addressed any of your issues and concerns. The lack of ****** care and his whole team has left me scared for life. I consider them a butcher shop.OrthoCarolina

OrthoCarolina billing system is horrible. I had procedure Feb 2, 2024. I received bill, Feb 18, 2024 I went online and made a payment. I go into PT twice a week and each day I visit, ** asked about the balance. I respond yes I know theres a balance and Ill make another payment in March. Because I didnt setup a payment plan with them, I am now harassed each visit about the balance even to the point of threatening to cancel current appointments and not book any future PT appointments as I was told my account would get locked all because I do not have a payment plan setup with them. I told Rep I am making payments so I dont feel the need to setup a payment plan with them. Rep advised my payments arent recognized in their system so therefore they will continue harassing me until I set up a payment plan with them. The Rep also advised although I am making payments, after 90 days from date of service, if theres an outstanding balance they will send it to collections, but if I had a payment plan setup then account would not go to collections. Make that make sense! I cannot wait until Im done with PT, Ill never use or even refer anyone to OrthoCarolina. They do care about a patients well being or health, all they care about is the money! I will write a review on every review board I can find, to warn others, to consider another facility for services.OrthoCarolina

The *************** Manager contacted the patient and explained that the outstanding balance on the statement was due upon receipt, without a payment plan. The payment plan procedure was shared with the patient. If the patient has additional questions she may contact the *************** Manager directly.
