In April 2022, we entered into a contract with Renu Energy Solutions for the purchase and installation of a solar panel system, including 23 solar panels and 1 battery. However, shortly after signing the contract, we were informed that we needed to pay an additional $6,920 for protected load panels or purchase two additional batteries (totaling three batteries). The system is significantly under-designed with panels and over-designed with batteries. The three batteries, with a combined capacity of 45 kW, are underutilized because the panels cannot generate sufficient energy to charge them. The Agreement provided by Renu Energy Solutions violates multiple South Carolina ************ including:Failure to use at least 12-point font.Lack of a retailers signature and date.Absence of required disclosures, such as the 10-day right to cancel notice in 14-point font and a cancellation form.Missing estimated start and completion dates, as well as a description of other fees.A fully executed agreement was never provided, rendering the contract non-compliant with state law.We did not receive the Renewable Energy Purchases document, required by South Carolina ************ until October 31, 2022, nearly a month after installation.Renu Energy Solutions failed to address significant issues, including a faulty configuration identified by an independent third party.Renu Energy Solutions proposed uninstalling the system immediately but delaying payment to us for four months. This arrangement leaves us financially vulnerable, as there is no assurance that the agreed-upon refund will be provided promptly or at all.Business Response

Renu Energy Solutions is aware of the core concerns that Irina Abrams has expressed in her complaint to the Better Business Bureau. Although we fulfilled her solar PV contract and battery storage contract, she feels her solar system doesnt generate enough energy to utilize her three Tesla Powerwall 2 batteries the way she intends to, making the battery system oversized for her needs. To address this, we offered a cash $12,000 refund (essentially the costs of the 3rd battery) on October 24, 2024, letting her keep all equipment and warranties. In January 2025, we offered a full refund contingent on uninstalling and retrieving the equipment, which she rejected, preferring the refund first.
Other points:
- The system works, providing Abrams significant tax benefits and energy savings. The $12K refund would offset the third batterys cost.
- We sent her both executed contracts on February 26, 2025, unaware she lacked them until her complaint.
- Regarding the potential inconsistencies with South ******** regulation at the time, only the Solar PV contract falls under the regulations. Our general terms are consistent with those regulations (i.e. the contracts include a 7 business day cancellation window for customers, which is effectively 10 calendar days). When we became aware of the regulations, **** notified Abrams via email of the regulations.
- A third-party report noted local utility restrictions (e.g., No Export settings) causing monitoring issues, not system design or performance.
Our January 2025 full refund offer, despite her tax benefits and savings, requires equipment removal first, with a signed agreement ensuring her refund. We believe our offers are generous, addressing her core concerns.**** remains committed to a fair resolution, and will continue to work in good faith to reach a resolution.Customer Answer

Renu Energy Solutions understands that although we have fulfilled both of the contracts to install solar PV and a battery energy storage system, providing the customer with significant tax benefits and energy savings, she has expressed a variety of concerns in her complaint. Although we disagree with some of the details she has provided, it appears that both parties are amenable to a resolution that would address all of her concerns.
In the customer's most recent response, she suggested that she would be interested in **** uninstalling and removing the system in exchange for a full refund to resolve her complaints if **** would first "provide a guaranteed payment schedule before uninstallation." Renu's previous offer included a written agreement which explicitly spelled out a complete 100% refund (in 4 payments) no later than 90 days after **** uninstalls the system. In the spirit of compromise, **** amends our previous offer to instead guarantee, with a legally binding agreement, a complete 100% refund no later than 60 days after **** uninstalls the system.
**** remains focused on finding a resolution that is agreeable to both parties.Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because:
Renu Energy Solutions continues to engage in deceptive practices and is proposing an unfair resolution to my complaint. They insist on uninstalling the system before issuing a refund, which is entirely unreasonable. There is no legitimate reason why **** cannot refund the full amount first and then proceed with the systems removal.
The industry standard in such cases is for payment to be made prior to the return or removal of a productespecially one as complex and stationary as a solar system. Given Renus history of misrepresentation, failure to address key issues, and refusal to comply with contractual regulations, I cannot agree to an arrangement that requires me to surrender my system without first receiving full compensation.
I remain open to a resolution, but only under fair and reasonable termswhich means **** must issue the full refund before uninstalling the system. I ask that the BBB take this into consideration as Renus proposal does not constitute a fair or good-faith resolution.Business Response

To address the customers allegations, **** did completely fulfill the two previous contracts with her, which included passing county inspections and utility review. In addition, she asked **** to hire a third party to QA the systems. **** completed that request (at our expense) and the third party report does indicate successful working systems. The claim that **** cannot be trusted to fulfill a contract (i.e uninstall and payment) or keep our word (i.e. hiring the 3rd party) is not supported by the evidence.
Regarding financial implications, to date the system has qualified the customer for $18,900 in Federal Tax Credits and $15,750 in State Tax Credits (with a max of $3,500 to be claimed each year for up to 10 years for the state tax credit), depending on her tax liability. Separately, her solar systems manufacturer reports that the system has produced at least ****** kWh of energy (as of 3/7/2025). According to her utility company's website, their "flat use rate" charges $.15219 per kWh, giving the energy that her system has produced a value of $2,349 in utility bill savings. All together that is just under $37,000 in quantifiable benefits. the system continues to provide benefits to the customer daily, as we discuss a resolution.
As we are at an impasse on the timing of a refund and uninstallation, **** would like to reintroduce and earlier our offer to refund the customer $13,000 cash and allow her to keep the complete system and all equipment. The customer would be free free to either keep the system (with now nearly $50,000 in benefits) or find another contractor who she trusts to remove the system and sell the equipment.Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because: I appreciate your response, but several key concerns remain unaddressed.
First, **** is not privy to my tax information and, therefore, cannot accurately determine what, if any, tax benefits I have received. The figures provided are purely speculative. Additionally, while the system has generated energy, it remains significantly underperforming and does not align with the expectations set at the time of purchase.
More importantly, **** has yet to explain why they cannot honor a full refund before uninstalling the system, especially given that they have already agreed to a complete refund. I initially invested $63,000 in this system, which, at its current performance, would take a century to pay for itself. Offering me a partial refund while leaving me to deal with the faulty system is not an acceptable resolution.
Furthermore, **** has failed to address the concerns raised in my previous complaints, including the misconfiguration of the system, misleading sales tactics, and failure to provide a properly designed solution. These core issues remain unresolved.
At this point, I would like a full refund before the system is uninstalled.***** ******

The basic facts of the situation are that ****, an Independent Third Party, as well as the manufacturers report that the systems are functional, though limited by the zero-export setting required by the local utility (not design or performance issues). Despite this, **** has made multiple offers of generous resolutions. The customer has stated repeatedly that she does not trust **** such that we do not believe that uninstalling the systems with a full refund is a viable option, as **** would require the customer's cooperation to uninstall the system. **** formally withdraws any offer of a full refund with an uninstall of the system.
Based on the customer's initial complaint to the ********************, her primary complaint that can be resolved was that the 3 battery energy storage system she purchased is larger than she believes she needs to utilize her systems the way she would like to. To address this, **** has offered to reimburse her for $13,000, more than the cost of the third battery, allowing her to keep the system in its entirety. This offer of a $13,000 cash refund with a signed release will only be valid until March 31st, 2025.
In a previous response, the customer expressed concerns about the installation and functionality of the CTs that **** installed. These CTs are a secondary reporting function that was not part of either the Solar PV or the Energy Storage System contracts they were additional work completed at Renus expense. While we disagree with her characterization of this functionality (they are functioning as expected given the zero-export setting), this question is moot as the CTs are not part of either contract.Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because: ***** latest response once again fails to acknowledge or properly address the fundamental issues with my system and their deceptive business practices. Their claims are misleading, and their so-called "generous resolutions" continue to be structured in a way that benefits ****, rather than actually resolving the harm caused to me as the customer.**** states that my system is functional but limited due to the zero-export setting required by the utility. However, **** designed and sold me a system knowing it would not meet my needs. The real issue is that the system is incapable of producing enough power for my home, regardless of export settings.
Failure to Address Installation Issues & Contract Violations **** dismisses the faulty CT connections as additional work that was done at their expense. However, the fact remains that these faulty connections have impacted the performance of the system and were identified by a third-party inspector as an issue. Instead of addressing the problem, **** is now attempting to sidestep responsibility by claiming that *** were not part of the original contract.
**** has failed to refute that they designed and installed a system that cannot meet my energy needs.
**** has failed to acknowledge that they did not provide me with a fully executed contract as required by South Carolina ************ has failed to address the documented technical failures that show my system is not consistently generating energy as promised.
**** has failed to justify why they refuse to issue a full refund before uninstalling the system, despite their previous willingness to do so.Initial Complaint

Just after the panels were installed, I noticed my roof sections where the panels were started developing cracks. No cracks were forming on the roof sides where there were not panels. I contacted **** and they sent someone out and said it was fine and not because of the panels. Which of course someone they sent would say that. Then those cracks started to leak water. The majority of the leak is coming from where their power lines go through the roof. I contacted them again. They stated I needed to find someone to inspect and provide a report proving its because of improper installation. Ive called so many roofers and none will provide a written report. One had done an inspection and verbally stated it was due to improper installation but I was not given a report. Im a still attempting to get a roofer that will give me a written report to provide them. If this continues and the damage worsens I will be getting an attorney.Business Response

In April of 2023, *************************** notified Renu Energy Solutions of cracks forming in her roof. **** sent a technician to the home on April 25, 2023, to assess the issue. The technician documented cracks in the plywood decking, between the trusses. The cracks were determined not to be the result of the solar panels, as the solar panels are secured to the trusses, and do not place weight on the decking between the trusses. Evidence was documented of leaks in the roof around the cracks in the decking, but not around the penetrations for cabling from the solar installation (see photos attached). As a result, the leaks were assessed to not be due to the solar installation.*************************** was advised that she can seek a second opinion regarding the issues with her roof from a roofer, and if a roofer disagreed with Renus assessment, **** would review the conclusions of the roofer. On August 8, 2024,*************************** notified **** again of leaks in her roof. On August 9, 2024,*************************** was advised to contact a roofer to mitigate any further damage from leaks, and to notify **** if the roofer disagreed with our previous assessment that the leaks were not due to the solar installation. On August *******, *************************** emailed a copy of a handwritten statement from a roofing company stating that they believe the leaks are due to improper installation of solar panels. On August 14, 2024, **** spoke to *************************** on the phone and provided a follow up email explaining that we will follow up with her roofer to ask for further details about their assessment, and that **** will schedule an additional site visit to evaluate and collect additional photo documentation based on her roofers feedback, as the issues her roofer reported do not align with the photo documentation we have on file from our visit to her home in April of 2023.Initial Complaint

My one year old solar system is underperforming by more than 30%. The company included a performance guarantee in the purchase contract that the system will meet at least a minimum standard across the first five years. For the last few months they have refused to honor the contract and fix the issue and now no longer answer emails.Business Response

This is reference to the compliant and response posted October 2023 about 5 solar panels out of 50 panels installed incorrectly. Your technician DID in fact state to me that the panels were installed incorrectly after he and the other technician dryed off in my home from taking the panels down during a rain storm. I have no reason to lie on anyone. What makes matters worse is that we paid for the roof to be replaced because the damage was so severe and you still refuse to answer our calls or replace the panels. We shouldn't have to pay to replace the panels when it was the fault of the poor installation. For you to say that we caused the damage as to say we had someone to tamper with the panels is crazy and completely untrue. We didn't even know about the damage until we tried to sit in our patio area. Just honor the contract and replace the panels. No charge. Proof of no spaces used in the picture.Business Response

We purchased our solar panels March 2020 and recently found where **** technicians did not properly install the panels on the roof of our patio to where the leak is so bad that the roof is in danger of falling in. I made contact to have someone come look and access the situation and was told I had to pay for the technician and for my roof to be replaced. When I explained to to them that the damage was more than 6 months old and that I shouldnt have to pay for the negligence of their technicians, they sent the technicians out to see the problem. The technician was able to see (in pouring rain) that the damage was critical and the panels needed to come down for the roof to repaired. Were 3 weeks in after the panels were removed and told someone will be coming to repair my roof and no one is answering my calls or text messages and my roof is not fixed. I have contacted my attorney to resolve the issue.Business Response

Our field team conducted a detailed diagnostic of the installation, including the rooftop penetrations.
This diagnosis of the leaking roof is not a result of the installation of the solar modules by Renu Energy Solutions. Our rooftop penetrations are positioned below the source of the leak on your roof.
Based on the evidence gathered by our field team, the primary cause of the roof leak is the improper installation of the ledger flashings, which are components that are separate from the solar panel installation process and above the site of panel installation.
Additionally, all findings from the diagnosis were communicated to the homeowner.
Of the forty five panels installed, forty are on the main house spanning two roof planes, while there are only five on the leaking roof. If the entire installation was negligent, we'd see leaking on the main house where the majority of the panels are located.
That being said, we are always trying to help our clients out of difficulty. However, in this case, it is going to require correcting the roof before reinstalling the five panels. If you would like us to help you with that, please let us know.

We were quoted $37k for a 31 panel system that would generate enough power to offset our bill by ********** was after the sales rep went through our home specs, and our previous 12 months of energy bills to come up with the right amount of panels to cover our energy consumption. This was in December of 2021. We signed a contract and obtained financing and four months later in April 2022 the system was installed. Since then we have not received more than 11% of production to offset our bill. We contacted **** and they ran a remote inspection of our system told us that everything is performing at optimal efficiency and offered nothing else to address the gap between 86% promised and receiving only 11%.We spent the next several months trying to have someone from **** explain why nothing has changed with our bills. We kept getting email messages saying that someone would be in touch and thanks for our patience but no one has contacted us.After doing our own research we came to find out that our power company CPW does not offer beneficial net metering for solar homes and that was the reason we weren't seeing any changes in our bill even though the panels were functioning properly. This was a big surprise as no one from ****'s department ever mentioned this critical piece of information. Throughout the entire process we were never informed that our power company would prevent us from seeing the benefits of a $37k investment. Only that we would be saving at least 86% reduced energy bills. So now we have to pay a 25 yr loan for something that provides no use to our home while still paying our energy bill.We are trying to avoid taking legal action but **** has shown no interest in finding a solution. We thought maybe by owning a battery to store the power that might solve our problem and still cant get a response from **** other than someone will be in touch and thanks for your patience. We are left with no other choice but to seek legal options.Business Response

Good afternoon,
**** and ****************** were able to speak on the phone this afternoon in order to come up with several steps to a resolution. **** is first looking into reimbursing his previous utility bills that have not been fully credited to the proposed amount due to the solar program with the utility. Secondly, **** will be replacing his current inverter with a self consumption inverter that will allow all of the solar production to be used directly in the home to cover a large portion of the homes consumption needs. Third, if the self consumption inverter does not meet the clients expectations, **** will provide pricing on a potential battery solution and work with the client on the best option for the home.
****************** has agreed to these next steps and **** will be taking formal action on the above starting today. A written summary will be sent to the client for record as well.
Thank you.
