We hired Southers in April 2022 to reside our home. From the beginning we had issues with this company in regards to our job. We never received a job date but supplies just mysteriously showed up to our home. Then we went through roughly 5 project manager throughout this project. First issue was that workers did not know what they were doing putting damaged materials onto our home. Which are still there. The initial sub-contractors that worked on our home were fired afterwards due to poor craftmanship from the company. The original PM was fired during the project. We were given a new PM who i had to explain all of our issues to and how we were treated with no resolution. The another PM was assigned to our home and they did some of the work but when i contacted him directly on the status of the job he advised me he was no longer with the company and someone should have informed me. Then another PM came to our house to assess the damages etc and after he walked around the entire property and took videos/pictures he informed us that it was actually his last day and SOMEONE ELSE would be taking over. Who we scheduled multiple meetings with and had multiple no shows. Mind you This is now all transpiring in Fall of 2023 and I am pregnant chasing down the company to come to my home. All while the financing company has informed me that the contractor (Southers) advised the job was completed. Fast-forward to April 2024, we have still not heard from the company regarding the outstanding list of damages they have done to our own home and my continued request for a billing adjustment because they did not uphold their contract and did additional damage to the property. There were multiple line items in the contract that my fianc completed himself because Southers did not and they didn't provide the necessary supplies we did! It has been the biggest nightmare and has ruined our experience in this home. We are looking for a billing adjustment from the company as well a refund.Initial Complaint

I hired Southers in November of 2021 to replace my roof. As soon as the roof was done, I could tell there was something wrong with it - the shingles never laid flat. I was told that they needed time for the roof to heat up so the glue would activate (or something like that). When that didn't happen, I contacted them and a production manager came out. He verified something was wrong and the roof would need replacing. I waited to hear back from them and when I didn't, I contacted them again only to find out that person no longer worker there and there was no information - so they had to send someone else out. And then it happened again. And again. And again. They have sent someone out at least 4 times (it may be 5 times - I have lost count) all coming to the same conclusion - the roof was either done wrong or the material (underlayment) was defective. I have messaged them countless times, being told every time they are sorry this is happening and someone will get back to me. No one ever does until I start bothering them again. I had high hopes when they last production manager came by - but the end result was the same - nothing. I can't even file a warranty claim with Owens-Corning because I they will not provide me the necessary paperwork (warranty & paid invoice) which I have asked for several times. I have spent more time trying to chase these people down for a resolution and have tried to not get upset over it and give them the benefit of the doubt that they will make things right, but I can see that was a mistake. This whole situation has been more than frustrating and I think I have been patient enough. If they can't redo the roof and redo it correctly, I want my money back and I will find someone else to do the job. This has been beyond maddening.Initial Complaint

We got into contract (attached) with Southers Construction for roof replacement with 50 yrs of warranty. However we found the replaced roof defective as it started leaking everytime there is rain. We contacted Southers in Jan 2023 about the issue when we noticed the leak but the issue is not resolved as of today after several attempts to reach. Southers does agree to take care of it but has failed to do in last one year citing reasons of being not having enough crew. The frequent water leaks have created mold in the ceiling. Last month rain water damaged the bed when we were not away. This has caused health issues leading to lot of frustration and mental stress while dealing with Southers.Customer response

There are regular reminders for repair and several phone calls and messages in 2023 and 2024. But Southers is not bothered to reply or send crew to repair the roof.Customer response

Signed a contract With Southers on 9/23/2022. Gave them a deposit of $17,206. The job was never even started. We have tried and tried to get a refund of the money, even being fine with multiple payments just to get our money back. Twice, I was on my way to NH to pick up a check and I was called by them to say "sorry we don't have the money." At this point, the owner, Ricky Southers doesn't even respond to calls, texts or emails. We have waited this long to pursue this as we were stupidly trying to give the guy a chance ,retired Marine, family guy etc, etc. and we were attempting to get the porches done, as they were unsafe at this point. In Researching, we have discovered, that they lost their Massachusetts contractors license on 9/20/22, 3 days BEFORE we signed. the contract. Isn't that fraud?Initial Complaint

After getting a couple of bids & checking contractors out via better business bureau we went under contract with Southers (the Portland ME branch) to build a 14x14 sunroom addition on the footprint of a screened porch. That was 1 year, 7 months and 3 weeks ago! They did not complete the work. We just hired a home inspector to get a professional opinion on the state of the project. Every single piece of the project is sloppily done, poorly done, incorrectly done or not done. This build should have taken 4 months maximum. We are now at 1 year 7 months. Over promise & under deliver is their motto. This firm will waste your time & money. Avoid at all cost. They are not to be trusted.Initial Complaint

On Friday 12/8/23 their sales rep was onsite to inspect roof leaks around both chimneys. He spent about an hour on site and went over repair options. I received a repair quote later that day for $1,685.00. I paid 50% deposit same day $843.00. I followed up on 12/13/23 and was told the order was on hold. The guy told me they priced the job wrong and it would be over $4,000.00 to complete the job as quoted. Or they would do much less work for the cost quoted. He wasn't nice about it and said I was trying to take advantage of them! I said no thanks and he agreed to process my refund by the end of the week. I sent an email Tuesday 12/18/23, no response. Called Wednesday 12/19/23 and was told it would be another couple weeks before the refund check would be sent. None of this is my fault and my money should be refunded ASAP.Customer response

Good Morning,
This email is in follow up to your request for an update. I have not directly heard from Southers Construction about refunding my deposit. They did post a reply to my google review on 12/22 stating they would refund the money. No name of who replied or date provided of when the refund will be issued.
Thanks for your assistance.

Hired & signed contract with Southers construction to do an entry door and vinyl side my house. Signed contract April 2023 & wrote deposit check for $24,707.05 and was told work would be done in within 8 weeks. 5 months later nothing done or material ordered, so I canceled contract and asked for refund. Said you’ll have your refund within a month they lied. It’s now November and I am still without siding & my refund check and the company will not give me any answers about itCustomer response

I hired Souther’s Construction to put on a new roof. The roof was completed at the end of May 2022. They had permission, with my advance approval, to fix what was needed while replacing the roof. After spending time on my roof, the only communication was that some sections over an addition had rot and needed replacement. That was approved, and fixed. I was told that was the only issue, nothing else was needed, they finished up, confirmed I was “all buttoned up” and everything was perfect. They left. Just two months later, ceiling staining on my second floor stairwell was visible. Calls to the company were all unanswered. It was a lot of work to figure out who to reach out to - I’d talk to one person and then they were gone. Then another, then another. Chaos to just have a conversation about this. A few months later, black mold appeared through the ceiling sheetrock and adjoining wall sheetrock. Still no response, still chasing them. in approximately July 2023(?) I learned they now had their office set up in Epping. I went to their office to discuss this. Again, lots of promises. “Oh, no problem, we’re sorry, we’ll take care of it.” It again took a significant period of time to get them to my house. The mold kept growing. They did show up (or claimed to have shown up), the only problem was it was without discussing an appointment with me and I was at work both times. They never left their truck. Is this so their records say I didn’t show up? I would never had scheduled a time in the 1pm timeframe working in Concord. It would have required taking vacation time and that did not happen and I had no notice. Finally a representative came out (late Oct/early Nov) and basically totally denied any responsibility (of course, standard operating procedure). No damage and no issue occurred until such time as the Souther’s roof was done. Now, it’s a nightmare and I’m living amongst black mold.Initial Complaint

Southers Construction did a project at my home which included installing siding and a covered deck (porch). The roof of the deck was too short, allowing rain to fall on the rails & floor of the deck. Two months ago a representative of Southers came out and said they would install a gutter under the porch roof at no charge. I have tried to contact Southers dozens of times over the past two months via telephone, email and messenger but have received no reply. I paid $55,000 to Southers for the project for which there is a 50 year warranty.Business response

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for the inconvenience you've experienced with the project completed by Southers Construction.
After reviewing your case, it appears that there has been a misunderstanding regarding the installation of a gutter under the porch roof. It's important to clarify that the original scope of the project, which included siding and the covered deck, did not encompass the installation of the porch roof gutter. As such, it is not covered under the workmanship warranty.
We understand your concerns regarding the rainwater falling on the rails and floor of the deck due to the roof's design. While we have offered to install the gutter as a goodwill gesture, it's essential to note that this falls outside the initial contractual agreement and warranty coverage.
We sincerely apologize for any lapses in communication and for not responding to your attempts to contact us. We are committed to improving our communication and ensuring that your concerns are addressed promptly.
If you have any further questions or concerns regarding the original project or the gutter installation, please do not hesitate to reach out to us directly at 603-734-4572. We value your business and appreciate your understanding of the scope of our work.
Thank you for choosing Southers Construction, and we remain dedicated to delivering a high-quality service.
