Incompetent and Unprofessional! As a small business owner I had the worst business to business experience with Tompkins VIST "Bank" in my entire professional career. After opening my business account, I proceeded to make a wire transfer for an earnest money deposit in order to facilitate a real estate purchase, I did this in person at my local branch. The bank gave me no indication that there were any issues, the money was in the account and there were no holds that I was made aware of, and I was lead to believe that the transaction occurred and the wire would go through within the hour. After hours the branch manager informed me, that "corporate" had raised concerns about my business filing status (3 - 4 weeks after I opened my account without a problem!). The bank simply cancelling my transaction is bad enough, the fact that no one deemed it important to inform me that they had done it, is an outright SET UP FOR FAILURE! Furthermore, this was not based on any legal or statutory violation, but a bank INTERNAL bureaucratic rule, that the branch manager was not aware of when he set up my account! To compound the misery of my experience with this "bank" - the branch manager told me that: "if I work with "them", they would work with me". I proceeded to incur an unnecessary expense in order to meet their filing requirements, and was asked to provide proof that I had complied with their demand. I did so the next day at the branch, when I was told that the bank had decided to close my account and terminate the relationship… There was no explanation, I was actually still within their own timeframe to remedy the situation!!! I had to ask if there was anything illegal about what I was doing, and of course, the branch manager said “No, it’s corporate” and “my hands are tied”. The way Tompkins VIST handled this matter, shows they could not care less about small business customers and in the end there was no apology, and I was just swatted away like a nuisance.

This customer’s national business structure was not a relationship the bank could support, and would be better supported by a national bank doing business in multiple states. As part of Tompkins VIST bank deposit account agreement, the bank can choose to exit or decline a relationship at any point in time. We wish the customer all the best in their business endeavors.
