I purchased a gift certificate for $200.00 at the restaurant La Candela II located at 205 Hempstead Tpke West Hempstead ** ***** on June 18, 2023 as a gift for a family member ***. When ******************* went to use the gift certificate on 12/10/23 the restaurant refused to accept the gift card as payment. This was shocking because he is a regular long time customer and has used gift cards before at this restaurant. First the server asked for the receipt for the gift card and it was supplied by ***. Then the server said he could not accept the gift card because it was on there old system. So then *** suggested they cancel this gift card and create a new card in the new system for him to use to pay the bill. The server then went back to the manager to discuss and then came back and said that is not possible. Then *** said you cant refuse to accept a gift card that was purchased less than 6 months ago please talk to the owner and figure out a solution. The server then returned and said you can only use the gift card if you spend over $200.00. *** then said that is not how gift cards work. It also states on the gift card in black and white that any unused balance will be good for future redemptions. The bill was around $60.00. *** said its just two of us, we all ready ate, we can not eat $200.00 worth of food and this was my birthday present gift card this meal was a gift! The waiter then went back to the owner and returned with another refusal of accepting the payment via gift card. *** then paid cash for his dinner and left. When returning home he filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. The BBB complaint number is ********. The restaurants phone number is ************ and the website is **************** I would like a refund for the $200.00 that I purchased with my credit card since the restaurant did not accept the gift card. I have attached two photos of the gift card including the original receipt. Thank you.

I received a $200 gift certificate to the restaurant. We have been going here for at least 7 years. After getting our bill of $76 and we gave them the gift card. We waited and then the waiter came back he said we need the paper receipt also. Luckily, we had it. After giving that to him and him being gone for 10 minutes, he came back saying that its a new system and we cant use it unless we spend the entire $200 at once. I said that we cant eat $200 of foood at once and that there is no such thing as a gift card that has to be used in full in one visit. I didnt want any money back. I would have taken the balance on a card since we like the place. The waiter went to the owner and came back saying they wouldnt take it unless we spend the full $200 at once. I explained again there is no such gift card that requires to use it all at one time. What if it was a $500 card. What two people are spending that much in one sitting? They dont speak very much English so instead of trying to argue my point, I paid the bill in cash and told the waiter that this is totally wrong. He agreed. He said thats not the way a gift card works. I want to see if the person who bought the card can go back to the credit card company to see if they can get their money back but we dont know if they paid cash yet.
