            Advertising Review:

            In October 2022, BBB contacted Closets by Design of Cleveland about its ads which contained the following statements: "Special Offer! 40% Off Plus Free Installation Plus An Additional 15% Off. Call 216-221-1466......40% off any order of $1000 or more. 30% off any order of $700-$1,000. On any complete Closet, Garage, or Home Office, Not valid with any other offer. Free installation with any complete order of $600 or more. With incoming order, at time of purchase only. Not valid at all franchise locations" These ad have appeared for a period of several months in the Cleveland area.  In addition, its website at https://cleveland.closetsbydesign.com/ stated "40% OFF* | FREE INSTALLATION *Some restrictions apply."

            The BBB Code of Advertising prohibits continuous sale offers. BBB requested substantiation that the advertised sale price was indeed a valid reduction from the company's regular selling price. The BBB also requested substantiation of "free installation." According to the BBB Code of Advertising, "free" offers must be temporary; otherwise, they become the advertiser's regular price. In addition, the word "free" should not be used if material factors such as quantity, quality, or size are arrived at through negotiation.

            The company responded that their ads do not include 'sale' or 'price reduction,' their promotions do not run continuously, they purchase in volume by discount, and they are in compliance with all advertising rules and regulations. 

            In April, 2023, the company advertised "40% + 10% OFF* + FREE INSTALLATION.."  *Some restrictions apply" on its website.  According to the BBB Code of Advertising, information referenced by asterisks must be clearly and conspicuously disclosed. Whenever such an offer is made advertisers must make clear at the outset all the terms and conditions of the offer.  BBB requested that the terms and conditions be clearly disclosed on its website.  The business did not add the terms of the offer.

            From May through July 2024, the company's website advertised "40% + 15% OFF* + FREE INSTALLATION + 12 MONTH SPECIAL FINANCING ON APPROVED CREDIT-Offer Expires in 30 Days" and "*Some restrictions apply." 

            As of August 2, 2024, its website advertises '40% + 15% OFF* + FREE INSTALLATION + 18 MONTH SPECIAL FINANCING ON APPROVED CREDIT-Offer Expires 08/18/2024" and "*Some restrictions apply."

            Dan is a very rude and aggressive individual. He was extremely inappropriate with me on multiple phone calls and his designers I believe are racists and made me feel very uncomfortable in my own home. Racist designers and HORRIBLE customer service. Avoid working with them at all costs. Work with ****** ******* ** **** **** ***** ******** Dan, the owner is extremely unprofessional and the entire company is racist. I have experienced the worst treatment in my entire life from all the employees working at this business. First, thier designer D showed up to my brand new home with mircoagressjons and attitude that I, a young black woman, could afford to build a brand new home during this economy as well as the funds to improve it immediately upon moving in. She asked me personal questions like what my husband did for a living and if we were the actual owners of the home instead of renters which made no sense because how many renters are prepared to spend $25-30K on cosmetic build ins?? The list goes on of how many racist things I was a victim of by her alone and of course when she left my home I did not seek to work with the company after that. They did however reach out to me with apologies and a discount as compensation so I entertained the idea of working with them again. Then, the real racism kicked in. The owner, Dan was rude as well as extremely aggressive with me during our conversations about scheduling conflicts that occurred between me and the new designer who as nice as she was, was very bad at confirming times and rescheduling appointments. The entire situation was very traumatizing and stressful to me and I am seeking legal consultation as a result of this horrible horrible experience.

            To whom it may concern: Closets by Design Cleveland leadership team has reviewed the complaint and reviewed our staff’s communications with the Complainant. At no time has anyone employed at Closets by Design communicated abrasively or inappropriately with the Complainant. We absolutely do not tolerate any sort of harassment or discrimination in the workplace and/or in our customer's home, as stated in our company handbook that all employees sign off on. In good faith, our senior leadership attempted to address the Complainant’s concerns, to no prevail. We bent over backwards to satisfy the Complainant. After Complainant cancelled previously scheduled appointments on more than one occasion, it was our decision to terminate the business / client relationship. Our franchise is locally owned and has been in existence in Cleveland for 17 years, and we have an impeccable record of satisfied customers from all socio-economic backgrounds, gender, and racial backgrounds. The Complainant’s allegations of “racist communications” and “aggression” toward her are inaccurate and insulting. At Closets by Design our upper management team has been instructed to train all designers to ensure that we are speaking and working with the homeowner and or the correct decision maker. In addition, this checklist guides our designers to communicate politely and professionally with all of our clients to ensure the client feels comfortable in their own home. In closing we invite anyone into our office and see for yourself the respect we have for all our customers. We stand firm and proud by our staff, our product, and our mission and wish the Complainant the very best. Sincerely, Closets By Design
