Signing such an agreement permits the consumer to take the vehicle home before financing has been approved.
Although offered as a convenience to consumers, these agreements can often create problems if the consumer interprets them to mean the final terms of the car purchase will be as originally promised.
The BBB strongly recommends that consumers read the agreement fully and understand all of the provisions to which they are agreeing. If the financing is not approved, they may be presented with terms that are different than initially negotiated and the monthly payments and/or term of repayment may be significantly higher.
If a trade-in vehicle is part of the negotiations, be certain the terms include a provision stating the trade-in will not be sold to any 3rd party until final loan approval has been granted. In this manner, if suitable financing terms cannot be obtained within the specified time frame, there remains the option of returning the vehicle and reclaiming the trade-in.
