I went into the store to buy a ******* leaf cigar, was asked for ID. I dont have my ID right now because my purse was stolen. The customer before me was not asked for ID & neither was the person after me. They both purchased items that require ID check. I asked why she wouldnt sell it to ******** said Im not going to lose my license over this! That makes no sense because she sold items to the person before & after ********** ID them.

    Business response

    10/09/2024

In August 2024, *** issued the final rule Prohibition of Sale of ******* Products to Persons Younger than 21 Years of Age." As outlined in the final rule, beginning Sept. 30, 2024, retailers must use a photo ID to verify the age of anyone under the age of 30 trying to purchase cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and covered tobacco products. Additionally, retailers may not sell cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and covered tobacco products with the assistance of a vending machine in facilities where individuals under 21 are present or are permitted to enter at any time.

In August 2017, Oregon Governor **** ***** signed Senate Bill 754, raising the legal age for buying tobacco products from 18 to 21 years. The law took effect Jan. 1, 2018. Early reports showed that fewer youth and young adults started smoking after the law took effect, and that they thought tobacco and vaping products were less easy to get. In 2019, the *** followed Oregons lead and raised the federal minimum age to purchase all tobacco products from 18 to 21.

Checking IDs You can only sell ******* Products to customers aged 21 and older.

Check photo ID of everyone who looks under age 30 who tries to buy ******* Products. Valid Forms of ID are:

? Drivers license or driving permit with picture from ****** or another state.

? Identification Card with picture from ****** or another state.

? Any other ID card with a birthdate and picture issued by a state or **************************

Customer came in to our store wanting to purchase a TOBACCO PRODUCT. She looked young/underage, so we asked of an Identification. Her response was she got her wallet stolen so couldn't present her ID for the age verification. Under Federal/State Law, anyone who looks under 30 needs to provide the Identification when requested (pictures on the phone does not qualify as a form of identification). When we refused the sale, she questioned why others are not being identified and said we are making this a BIG DEAL when it is NOT a BIG DEAL from her point of view.

Selling tobacco product to minors is a big deal and we did proper procedure under federal/state law. Customer was forcing us to sell the tobacco product to her without proper identification, and being unable to provide the identification due to her personal event can not be accepted.

Also other customers that were in-line waiting (the ones that she's mentioning regards to other persons not identified) are regular customers for years that are more than 30 years old and looks more than 30 years old. We have many regular customers and the reason we asked for the identification is we did not recognize her and she looked underage/minor/young.
