In july of 2023, I contacted the office to inquire about homeowners insurance on a new home. The representative I spoke with (***********************), informed me that **** insurance exchange would not insure my home without upgrading to a farm policy, and that because I keep honey bees that i was a liability. I explained that I did not believe that was necessary. She then explained that they would not continue coverage on my first home without upgrade as well. I informed her that i would shop elsewhere for coverage. Now the insurance agency claims that I owe them $94.00 for a continuation of coverage from the expiration date of the policy. I have called and disputed the charge, as the representative told me they would not cover, but they claim it was my responsibility to cancel. I disagree, but they have reported me to a collection agency for payment.

    Business Response

    Date: 08/23/2023

Response to customer complaint received by mail on 8/7/23
4/22/2022 The customer in question contacted our office to obtain an insurance quote on a home he was looking to purchase and operate a Bee Keeping business on the premises. He stated that it will be similar to the operation he has at his current home. We advised that we would need to rewrite his current homeowners to a farmowners policy due to the Bee Keeping business.
6/3/2022 We contacted the customer with a farmowners insurance quote and he indicated that he would like to obtain quotes from other companies. We advised him to notify us if he purchases a policy with another company so that we can have him sign a cancellation request form to cancel his current homeowners policy. (We are required to obtain the insured's signature on a cancellation request form in order to cancel the policy)
No notification was received from the customer that he had purchased other insurance so his homeowners policy renewed on 2/27/2023.
The following is the sequence of events from the renewal of the homeowner's policy. No contact was made to our office by the customer regarding the 6 notifications that were mailed to him each month from 1/14/2023 to 6/12/2023 until he received a noticed from the collection agency.
    (1) 1/14/2023 Homeowners renewal policy for 2/27/2023 was mailed
    (2) 2/6/2023 Invoice was mailed for premium due on 2/27/2023
    (3) 3/6/2023 Past due invoice was mailed
    (4) 4/3/2023 Notice of Cancellation effective 5/5/2023 for non-payment of premium was mailed
    (5) 4/25/23 our office email notice to the customer reminding him of the cancellation notice effective 5/5/2023 for non-payment of premium.
    (6) 6/12/2023 Final Statement of balance due for $94 was mailed. (This is the premium charged for the period of time the insurance company provided coverage from the renewal date of 2/27/2023 until the policy cancelled on 5/5/2023)
    (7) The customer called our office on 7/12/2023 after he received a collection notice for the $94 to dispute this charge. We advised after the company has provided coverage and mailed notice to him for the prior 3 months the company will not reverse the premium charge.

This customer has been a valued customer and we would like to offer an option that may reverse the premium charge. If he can provide us with proof, (copy of an insurance policy), that he has purchased other insurance effective back to the date of his policy renewal of 2/27/2023. We can submit this to the insurance company and ask that they remove the premium charge since he already had other insurance coverage.
