I applied to a local Ocean State Job Lots and received an offer of employment. I was made to physically arrive in-store to complete onboarding process. I was only able to complete part of the process because the new management did not have the ability to log into their accounts to process the rest of the onboarding procedures. I was told by a manager named **** that because I had been there for more than an hour, and was being sent home early, that I would be paid for 4 hours worth of work.The following week when I went to complete the onboarding process, I am told **** no longer works there but the store manager remembers me from that day and I can come in to finish at another time. I told him I was able to only do so at the moment at the previously arranged time **** and I had agreed to prior to him apparently no longer working there. That week, I had to take a prearranged flight to **********, which I did. While in CA, I receive email notification that my background check had came back (I have two prior misdemeanors). Upon arriving back in *************, I emailed *********************** of Ocean State Job Lots regarding when I could finish the onboarding process. She replies back that they will be rescinding their offer due to my background. I respond that I understand, and thank her. I then ask her about the check/payment for the 4 hours of work (as according to *********************) and how I will be able to receive payment, and *********************** has stopped all contact. She will not respond to emails, text messages, phone calls nor voicemails. I have been trying to reach her, or any other representative regarding this issue and I have heard nothing. They wont even tell me if they will or will not be paying for the portion of the onboarding I did complete. This is wrong, unprofessional, and unethical. I dont dispute the background check, the rescinded offer, or anything else. I do however feel I deserve, at minimum, an explanation/response and at maximum, full payment + late fees.Business response

The new ship to store check out system does not work at all. I am trying to buy 2 kayaks, and every time I try to check out it says The card payment has failed, please use an alternate card.I have tried all of these different things and continue to get the same message, it is clearly a faulty website/checkout system. 1. Tried 3 different credit cards, including **** and Mastercard 2. I have not used any autofill things, and I type it all in manually 3. I have tried 3 different browsers, ************************ Edge, and Firefox 4. I have tried a phone, a laptop, and a chromebook.5. I have tried several different days thinking maybe there was a technical issue I have talked to store associates, and on the phone with customer service, and they all say that they can not place orders anymore and that it must be done through the website. I have been a loyal customer for 15 years, and spend thousands of dollars here every year, but this might be the straw the broke the camels back. There has to be a way for me to place this order!!!Business response

On 01/11/2022 I made a purchase at ocean state job lot in *******, *************! I wasnt happy with my purchase and I returned the merchandise two hours later to ocean state job lot in ******, ************! The total amount purchased was $74.38 and the return amount was for $66.94! So this purchase was made on my discover credit card and I was told my return refund would go back on my discover credit card! I have still not received my money yet!Business response

I have shopped at Ocean State Job lot for many years. They had Ship to store items we could purchase over the phone or at the store. Now they have changed Ship to store items for online purchase only the big problem here is that they do not accept their own Store Gift Cards only debit or credit cards for the online ship to store. You can't even submit the order at the store where you could pay in Cash, Credit, Debit or Store gift card. I am not talking about trying to purchase with store credit or crazy deal I am trying to make a purchase with a Store Gift Card that was purchased in cash. I talked to the cooperate **************** Manager and all she could say is that they are sorry and this was the way marketing chose for ship to store items. I am trying to make a purchase with a store gift card . They will not honor for me to make a purchase using my Gift Card This is completely UNACCEPTABLE. I would have not purchased any Store Gift Cards if they were going to implement this changeBusiness response

On September 1, 2021, Ocean State Job Lot implemented a new Buy Online, Ship to Store program. All FAQ;s in regard to policies, regulations, payments, etc. were posted on our website for the customer to review.
Ship to Store FAQ states:
What forms of payment do you accept online?
We accept ***** Mastercard, Discover and **************** online. At this time, we do not accept Gift Cards, Crazy Deal Gift Cards, Merchandise Credit, or EBT online.Crazy Deal FAQ states:
How do Crazy Deals work with the Buy Online, Ship to Store Program?
Crazy Deal Gift Cards received online or in store can only be redeemed in store.We are collecting this kind of feedback and forwarding to our Ecomm team regularly. We are looking to implement this form of payment online in the future; however, at this time it is not accepted. Crazy Deal gift cards may still be used towards any in-store purchase.

Ocean State Job Lot should have kept the option of submitting orders in the store for ship to store items if not all payment options are available for online purchases There is no reason to go backwards and remove all other buying options that were available. Pasting the *** doesnt take care of the fact that OSJB is not allowing purchases to be made online with Store Gift Cards.There was no consideration from the company to customers that have already spent money purchasing gift cards with cash. When implementing a new change the Company should be looking at ways for customers to be able to purchase items conveniently adding online is great dont get me wrong but you need to accept other form of payments. Any other retail store has the option to use their store gift card as form of payment for online purchases. The resolution here should be allowing stores to continue placing orders for ship to store items until Store Gift cards are accepted for online purchase.
Businesses and Customers should be civil, courteous and polite in their responses to complaints. It is important to remain professional and productive when participating in the BBB complaint process.

We understand the customers frustration and have it documented on our end. In the future we are hoping to introduce additional forms of tender to our site such as OSJL gift cards and Crazy Deals; however, at this time these methods of payment are not accepted. Additionally, Ship to Store orders can only be placed online. When this program was introduced, we eliminated in store and over the phone ordering. Shopped store #***, transaction #**** on 8/16/2021. I purchased ****** Energy High PROTEIN, 30g, Shake and was charged a ************* tax on this food item. No where on the label does it state: Weight loss; dietary or supplement. But the good people at Ocean State claim that a ************* tax on a ready mix high protein shake is justified because THEY believe this product to be something that ISN'T listed on the product itself. I sent email and received response for a "customer service" individual that totally ignored my claim that the product was "HIGH PROTEIN SHAKE" and immediately dismissed claim.This Company is taxing a food product ILLEGALLY and is IGNORING my inquiry.Business response

We have reviewed this further with our taxation department and it was found that the ingredients in the ****** Protein Shake are considered food products and therefore according to MA PLR ***** the ****** Shake is considered a food product, not dietary, and would not be sales taxable. We are working to update our point of sale system to properly reflect the programmed tax on this product. The customer can return to his local store, with his receipt, for a full refund on the tax that he was charged. We apologize this inconvenience and confusion.Customer response
