Providence Hospital, located in downtown Columbia, is a 322-bed hospital founded by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine. The facility is best known for the expertise in cardiac care it provides through Providence Heart Institute, which serves as a nationally recognized referral center for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Providence Northeast is a 64-bed community hospital that includes a transitional care unit for newly discharged patients who require skilled nursing and rehabilitative care.
As of August 2001, the Sisters of Charity purchased the 50% ownership of Columbia HCA in Providence Hospitals. As a result, the Sisters of Charity reclaim 100% ownership of the organization.
