    Pattern of Complaint:

    BBB files indicate Self Financial Inc. has a pattern of complaints concerning contract and credit reporting issues.  Specifically, consumer complaints allege objections about debts listed on their credit report including questions regarding liability for debts from Self Financial and/or Lead Bank.  Some consumers allege they do not have a contract with Self Financial or in some instances have not received a copy of their original contract when they requested it from Self Financial Inc.

    On October 12, 2023, Self Financial Inc. responded that their products report under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requirements resulting in both positive and negative information being supplied to the Credit Bureaus based on the actions of the consumer.  Self Financial Inc. replied if their customer attempts to have negative history removed it is often an action recommended in social media circles, but consumers agree to Self Financial Inc.’s 1) Terms and Conditions which outlines the terms of the accounts Self Financial Inc. offers 2) Loan Documents in which the customer agree to the loan terms during onboarding and is provided a copy in their dashboard. 3) Cardmember Agreement (Secured card)-The customer agrees to the cardmember agreement and terms during their onboarding.  The agreement is also provided in the customer’s dashboard.  Self Financial’s response also detailed accounts cannot be created without a customer agreeing to it and other items during onboarding of both the Credit Builder and Secured Credit Card accounts. 

    BBB files also indicate that Self Financial Inc. has a pattern of complaints concerning consumers unaware of a personal loan or credit card opened in their name with Self Financial Inc.

    Self Financial Inc. responded they have a robust practice of verifying the identity of their consumers during the onboarding process.  BBB provided examples of complaints with these concerns and Self Financial Inc. responded claiming of ID theft continues to be a tactic promoted in social media circles as a method to remove delinquent tradelines; Self Financial Inc. responded the examples BBB referenced fit this narrative.   Self investigated the complaints into possible ID theft and confirmed the customers agreed to the accounts in question and provided a response reflecting their findings.

    BBB determined Self Financial Inc.’s response did not reflect a summary of actions to work on addressing or eliminating the underlying pattern of complaint concerns.

      This company has been TRASHING my credit report every month of almost 3 YEARS. In October of 2021 I reached out asking to close my Self Credit Builder Secured card. I had lost my job an was in treatment for cancer and could no longer afford the payments. I explained my situation to the agent online and asked that my security deposit be used to pay off the card. She agreed that this could and would be done. A few months later I start getting emails every single month saying that I'm past due an its reporting to my credit. This is RIDICULOUS. I received confirmation in October 2021 that my security deposit would be used to close my card and they're still trashing my credit years later. I've reached out to them numerous times and can neve reach anyone. I managed to reach someone today and they are claiming my running balance is $197 but I owe $153 and no accounting of where my $100 security deposit went and basically telling me they won't honor anything said to me in November 2021 and will keep adding to the balance and trashing my credit.

      I am rejecting this response because:

      They did not address the fact that I asked for the $100 Security Deposit (It was NOT $91) be applied to the account and close it in OCTOBER of 2021. The live chat representative that I spoke with was agreeable and said I would not incur further charges or credit reporting after that time. Then, surprise, every month I'm getting dinged again and again and charges are growing because Self left my account open long past the date it was supposed to have been closed. Had they did what the live chat representative told me they would, it would have never incurred charges. She said she would apply the $100 and that I needed to provide my card information to her email to process the remaining balance. I did so and incurred a charge. I will attempt to go back to that old bank account to show the remaining balance due after the $100 in OCTOBER was paid. Self is flat out lying, inaccurately keeping records, and destroying the credit of someone just trying to make it through extensive medical treatments. They've been dinging me for YEARS causing all kinds of issues. I will be reporting to Consumer Financial ***************** next.

      I am rejecting this response because: 

      They are still not addressing my concerns that 1.) I requested closure of this in October 2021 and 2.) One of THEIR live chat reps assured me it was taken care of, emailed me for my card info, and charged it. Self is also emailing me separately from this complaint, claiming I emailed them in November of 2022 asking for them to delete everything if I paid. But I sent no such email. The only thing I can now gather is that this ENTIRE organization is a scam out to harm people who need help the most and that their live chat rep basically stole money from me after emailing me for my card information. 

      I will follow up with CFPB and look into legal options as it seems Self is going to continue perpetrating their scam rather than removing years of incorrectly reported credit dings and acknowledge that my balanced was PAID in October 2021.

      I signed up for the SELF **** credit card with the agreement that I would be taking out a loan and paying it back- the money was supposed to be put in a cd, to total approximately $******. The maturity date was reached 2 weeks ago,and a week.before they were supposed to mail me the check, they increased my credit to $650 and I used about $50 of that. My check was never mailed to me. I called SELF and they told me I would be mailed only $75 instead of the $700. I had to question this amount and was told I was charged for accepting the increased credit. I never agreed to this and it was not made clear when they raised my limit that the money would be taken out of my CD. I asked for my check of ****** to be mailed to me and SELF refused unless I paid them $200 to close the account. I opened the account to improve my ******************** situation and now it is worse because of this fraudulent transaction. I explained I was in dire straits due to recent job loss and they still refused. Now I am at risk of being reported to the credit bureau, after all the work I did to repair it.

      I am rejecting this response because: They knew I was expecting my CD payout, because I called 2 weeks prior to the CD maturity date and told them I was expecting it, and they confirmed that they were going to mail it. Instead SELF  increased my credit limit, not making it clear that accepting  it  would prevent  me from getting my payout. They KNEW I wanted the check mailed to me and deceptively baited me, by increasing my credit limit. I should not have to suffer extra financial difficulties because of their deceptive and fraudulent practices. I truly need the payout, so that I can pay my bills and not get evicted from my apartment.

      Self credit will not replace my car d. **************** line is just a recording but you can't replace card without speaking to someone. I have called numerous times with no result. A couple months ago I got a person but never received my new card.

      self advertised the company as a credit building company and i would pay a certain amount of money monthly and after so many months of on time payment they report back to your credit. i paid 2 payments of $25 totaling $50. They never reported on my credit but in facts said they never received any money from me at all then reported on my credit that they gave me a loan and that i owe the $520. At this point i no longer care about the money lost but the negative affect it has on my credit i just want the account removed completely .

      I had a credit alert from Transunion and Equifax today that I had opened up a new account with this business. First of all, I do not know who this company is and absolutely did not open an account or take a $500 loan out!!. I tried to call the company to discuss, but they have a recording stating that they won't talk to you on the phone that you need to file reports with the credit bureaus which I did, but I do not find that a satisfactory response from the company. I want them to remove this from my credit report ASAP. I should not have to go through a 30 day process with the credit bureaus in hopes that it goes my way.

      I am rejecting this response because:  I spoke with your company this morning on the phone. I spoke to *****.  She advised me that my name I provided (*******), was not the name on the account. I explained to ***** that this is not an account I had opened.  My name has been ******* for over 10 years.  I asked for information on the account and she told me that because the names did not match, she could not answer my questions.  I asked her to check my old name to see if it matched, which was ******** and she confirmed that to be the name on the account. I was divorced in 2012 and at that time I changed my name back to my maiden name. So I have not been ********************************* nor used the name since 2012. ***** advised me that she initiated the account closure and would be escalating it to another team and that someone would reach out to me within 5-7 business days. I don't like that there's no phone number for the team that this is escalated to. I do not need a Credit Builder account and would never have opened this type of account. It's scary that companies like you can open "savings" accounts without proof of identity and list them on someone's credit report as a loan. That seems very deceitful. I want this account removed from my credit reports on Transunion and Equifax immediately please.  The email used to open this account *********************** is an email account I no longer use and after this is resolved I will take steps to delete it.
