    Pattern of Complaint:

BBB files indicate Self Financial Inc. has a pattern of complaints concerning contract and credit reporting issues.  Specifically, consumer complaints allege objections about debts listed on their credit report including questions regarding liability for debts from Self Financial and/or Lead Bank.  Some consumers allege they do not have a contract with Self Financial or in some instances have not received a copy of their original contract when they requested it from Self Financial Inc.

On October 12, 2023, Self Financial Inc. responded that their products report under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requirements resulting in both positive and negative information being supplied to the Credit Bureaus based on the actions of the consumer.  Self Financial Inc. replied if their customer attempts to have negative history removed it is often an action recommended in social media circles, but consumers agree to Self Financial Inc.’s 1) Terms and Conditions which outlines the terms of the accounts Self Financial Inc. offers 2) Loan Documents in which the customer agree to the loan terms during onboarding and is provided a copy in their dashboard. 3) Cardmember Agreement (Secured card)-The customer agrees to the cardmember agreement and terms during their onboarding.  The agreement is also provided in the customer’s dashboard.  Self Financial’s response also detailed accounts cannot be created without a customer agreeing to it and other items during onboarding of both the Credit Builder and Secured Credit Card accounts.

BBB files also indicate that Self Financial Inc. has a pattern of complaints concerning consumers unaware of a personal loan or credit card opened in their name with Self Financial Inc.

Self Financial Inc. responded they have a robust practice of verifying the identity of their consumers during the onboarding process.  BBB provided examples of complaints with these concerns and Self Financial Inc. responded claiming of ID theft continues to be a tactic promoted in social media circles as a method to remove delinquent tradelines; Self Financial Inc. responded the examples BBB referenced fit this narrative.   Self investigated the complaints into possible ID theft and confirmed the customers agreed to the accounts in question and provided a response reflecting their findings.

BBB determined Self Financial Inc.’s response did not reflect a summary of actions to work on addressing or eliminating the underlying pattern of complaint concerns.

I opened a credit builder account through Self on Jan 08, 2021. I have made monthly payments on time and decided to pay off the account on Sept. 28,2021 using a debit card from my bank account thats listed in my credit builder account. All of a sudden after paying off my credit builder account, I received an email stating that my credit card was frozen pending that upload documents proving my identity. I have submitted my drivers license and debit card information as they required several times.I had to prove my identity to open this account in the first place on Jan8th.They are trying to keep my money as they have frozen also the payment of my completed credit builder account which I am owed $400.49. I have tried to use their chat and email to resolve this but I feel like that they are just trying to keep money that is owed to me. I just want the money owed to me.

I opened a secured **** credit card with this company and later closed the account due to the fees associated with the account. Per the terms Im supposed to be issued a refund for the unused balance. I closed the account on September 25, 2021. There was no response from or acknowledgement from this company until 9/29 advising me that the account was closed and Id be issued a check within 14 days. The 14 days has expired. And the funds could have easily been sent to me electronically since this company has my bank information on file, a requirement when opening the account. Its my belief that they intentionally hold consumer funds for their own benefit. I have yet to receive my refund, an confirmation that its been sent or even a courtesy update. My communications go unanswered. I would like to have my refund issued immediately.

I am rejecting this response because: they failed to reimburse the unauthorized charge. Luckily my bank was able to submit a charge back on my behalf.

I opened my credit builder account on 09/10/2020. I chose the 50 a month plan for 12 months and paid my account on time every month. My account maturity date is 09/10/2021. I never opened the credit card or debit card that Self Lender offers. I chose to have my payout immediately after my contract ended. I get an email on 09/22/2021 stating my payout check is in the mail and should arrive in **** business days. I live in Nevada and Self Lender is located in *****. First red flag was the delivery window for my check to arrive, it doesn't take 10 business days for **** to deliver a check to my mailbox from ******, *****. On 10/6/2021, exactly 10 business days after I got the CHECK IN THE MAIL email from self lender, I get another email stating my check was returned to their office for being UNDELIVERABLE. My mail carrier confirmed with me on 10/7/2021 that he didn't RTS any of my mail. I believe SELF LENDER is lying about sending my check and is trying to defraud me. I just want my money

On or around October 1 2021, I recvd an email from my credit monitoring app that my score dropped. I log onto my app to see what changed and I noticed an entry for SF/Lead bank. I log into my portal to see that I am past due 1 month. I reach out to customer service and explain that I was recently sick with Covid as well as my kid and a family member was diagnoses with a depilating disease and on top of that my card was stolen. I never recvd any phone calls letting me know my account was past due. I rectified the payment immediately. I have never been late since the opening of this account. I was covered under the cares act at this time and they still reported me to all 3 bureaus. I have been working diligently to clean up my credit to buy my first home. Now my dream has been destroyed. All I ask is a goodwill adjustment. Ive reached out to customer service to no avail. Ive asked for email addresses all on deaf ears. I cant escalate a call or request a call back.

This company sounds great on paper, in reality they are perpetrating one the largest scams in North America, if not even more far reaching. Take this seriously! Do your own research. Here I will help you. Simply dial their phone number ************. They owe so many people just like me their payout, Self has just given a caned answer that runs you in a non productive manner that is totally unacceptable. Self wants so called documentation, they stated they are required by law to do. I.e a picture of yourself, a full clear picture of your driver's license, bank statements including your full bank account number, routing numbers, pictures of your payments and it never ends. The agreement was, after your full fill the agreement, a check will be sent out within **** days. A check mind you. Again do your do diligence. The internet complaints under "How was your experience with Self". Some are fabrication, others are scary angry. Self always has a canned answer. We are talking 700d per.

Simply because, they continue to give me the same old song and dance they have done for  months. I never missed  one payment,  as a mater of fact , the payments I made were ******, ******, the first month,  ****** the second  month,  and ****** on or about the third month,  settling the agreement. This nonsense saying, there was " unusual  activity ". Just another stall tactic.  They have absolutely  all of my totally invasive information they need, Frankly, think about it,  why  would  an individual put his name out there publicly,  go to the B.B B. And our local news affiliate WSB Atlanta- ***************************** to make an attempt to stop this agreegus behavior. At this point,  it's no longer  about the  money. I just want to  expose them for who they are. Best  guess I am going to have to  seek legal counsel.

This company simply steals money from people. They claim to open a certificate in your name that you make monthly payments on for an agreed amount of time, and report those payments to credit bureaus, which they actually do this part. Come time for your payment agreement to be over and the certificate closed, they just don't send you the money you have been paying in. They will send an email claiming that your certificate has been closed. Then another email that you have been mailed a check. Why they don't simply put the money back into the bank account they have been debiting it from is just asinine, but they "say" you'll receive a check in the mail, you don't. After countless emails and attempted calls, they just send another email saying your check has already been mailed. They don't mail it. I received an email on 6/26/21 saying my check was mailed. Today is 10/6/21, I still have not received a check.
