On March 1, 2024 I went to Cliffs to get a money order for $1,340 to pay my rent for the month. As I was standing at the counter, the cashier told me that it was going to take a second because of the amount of the money order for the back office to approve it after waiting about five minutes the cashier handed me a paper to sign stating that my money has been confiscated and only will be getting a return of $351.08 out of the $1340.00 that I handed her for my money order. She stated that I owed loan to Cliffs finance from 2008 that was unpaid. I was not provided a contract or any proof that I owed this money. I only provided a receipt that showed the balance that was confiscated for the supposed loan. I am devastated by these unfair and deceptive practices as I am a single mother of 2 unable to pay my rent. Im sure its a more professional and decent way for a business to collect a debt. I havent spoken to a lawyer yet but an employee *************************** that was trying to help me stated that the loan was from 2008, and was charged off in 2015 but I still owed on the interest. I tried to get help from Mr. ************** who in the past has been sympathetic in similar situations as mine and have the power to help me but his decision was not to help. **************** stated as we were waiting on Mr.Taken decision, that his decision just depended on what kinda day he was having. Im sure businesses in ***** have guidelines and regulations for situations like mine and not just by the way Mr.Taken is feeling any given day.

    Business Response

    Date: 03/08/2024

I, *****************; reached out to the customer to let her know we were willing to refund her the payment.  ************** and I then discussed the need for ************** to start making payments on the account.  We discussed the original loan amount and I explained why the total had grown as much as it had.  We discussed ************** making payments each month for as much as she can so that we can get her out from under this debt and get her credit back on track.

On 3/7/2023 at approximately 6:30 I went to Cliffs Check Cashing located at ********************************** ***** to place a $300 money gram transaction. While doing the transaction their computer froze and I wasn't able to get a receipt nor verification that the transaction was complete. The clerk called Money Gram and was told that the transaction didn't complete as there wasn't a reference number nor any amount of payment. The clerk called her District Manager name ***** (LNU) and he told her not to refund my money nor do another transaction and the clerk kept my $300 without giving me a receipt or proof that the transaction was complete even after Money **** told her that it didn't come through. I've spoken to the Cliffs **************** but have yet to get this issue resolved. I can't understand how my funds can literally be taken from me without a receipt, transaction, or refund while I'm constantly being passed around and over as If my money and business is unimportant.

We have sent the transfer for ****************. He is satisfied.

    Customer Answer

    Date: 03/09/2023

(The consumer indicated he/she ACCEPTED the response from the business.)
I accept the response because Cliffs Check Cashing did eventually resend the funds to Money Gram later that day after 5:00 P.M., and after I constantly called and returned to the store and got BBB involved. I only wanted the service performed that they charged me $9.95 to do. The District Manager, *****(LNU) was very unprofessional and evasive as he avoided my calls when I was seeking rectification and or a refund. I will no longer do any business with such a company with poor customer service and a lack of leadership.
