On June 2, 2023 a client I advocate for was harassed and discriminated against at Harmon’s grocery store in West Jordan, Utah for having a (VERY well behaved) service dog in the store. She was approached by two different managers 4 times. First telling her she couldn’t have her dog in the store and she needed to leave, then telling her Harmons Policy trumps federal law, then she was told she could continue shopping but the dog had to be taken out to the car, then the manager tried to play with and touch the dog that was wearing a vest that said “SERVICE DOG, DO NOT TOUCH”, then was told the police would be called. Her fully trained service dog didn’t leave her side the entire time she was in the store. She has a deadly food allergy and her dog can detect if it’s in the food she’s buying because it’s not always listed or has been cross contaminated. On top of that, she also has a heart condition that causes her to faint unexpectedly. Her dog lets her know when her heart is acting up so she has time to sit down instead of having a hard fall in the middle of the store. The managers and staff are not properly trained in ADA laws, which tells me every single person with a disability that goes into one of their stores is NOT safe, and could be threatened to be kicked out for using medical equipment to help keep them alive, too. Would they have threatened to take my oxygen tank away? I need it to stay alive just as much as my client needs her service dog to stay alive.
