    Pattern of Complaint:

    BBB files indicate that Advanced Towing Company LLC (Advanced) has a pattern of complaints concerning predatory towing tactics, poor customer service, and improperly towing vehicles.  On June 18, 2019, BBB submitted a written request to the company encouraging them to address the pattern of complaints.  At that time, Advanced had not responded to any complaints filed by consumers with our organization.

    Advanced had posted a statement on their company’s website that consumers complaining with the BBB were not in fact their customer.  They only towed vehicles in accordance with contracts with their commercial clients, whom they believe to be their only customers.

    Specifically, complainants reported to BBB state that Advanced uses predatory towing tactics such as placing spotters to watch drivers walk off after parking.  In one example, a person parked in a reserved spot for a particular store and although she visited that store, she also entered a neighboring store.  While in the neighboring store her car was towed.  There are also several claims from consumers who stated a tow truck for the company watched them while they parked legally, and still towed them before they returned to their vehicle.  Reasons include: time limits that were not violated, expired meters that either were not expired or not functioning properly, or parking violations that were not valid.  For example, a vehicle that was parked in a valid area between the hours of 8am - 11pm was towed at 10:03pm according to the documentation provided.  On some occasions, police were called to the scene by the consumers in order to get their car “dropped” from the tow truck.

    Most complaints claimed the following allegations:

    • Poor customer service practices, verbally abusive staff when consumers went to pick up their vehicle that in some cases required police intervention;

    • Inability to reach the company by phone when trying to obtain information regarding the pick up of a vehicle;

    • Long wait-times with no explanation when picking up vehicles;

    • Additional fees tacked on and charged without notice after pick up.

    Ultimately, consumers had to not only deal with predatory towing, but they then had to endure multiple obstacles and difficulties when trying to obtain  their towed vehicles.

    In several cases, there are claims that Advanced improperly towed their vehicle.  Some instances show that cars were towed even though the consumer displayed valid parking permits.  One consumer even states that the driver attempted to tow the vehicle while they were still sitting in it.  Other complaints allege that the driver did not properly secure the vehicle causing damage that Advanced refused to take responsibility for or provide insurance information so that a claim could be filed.

    On May 5, 2020, Mr. John O’Neill from Advanced reached out to BBB staff in response to the letter sent to him in June of 2019.  The BBB was able to work together with Advanced to make some minor corrections to items displayed on the company’s BBB Business Profile. The following was addressed:  company addresses, phone numbers, the time in business, and alternate business names.  O’Neill stated, “Once the items we have asked to be addressed are corrected or enabled maybe we can participate before another 5 or 10 years pass.”  BBB staff has addressed the items of concern and has also encouraged O’Neill to respond to the consumers who filed complaints with our organization.  Since then, Advanced has sent one response and to date has 46 complaints that have closed without a response.

      This company is using predatory practices to illegally tow cars from a lot located at **** * ******** ****** in Arlington, Va. I parked a few minutes after 1:30, got out of my vehicle and walked up to the ********** sign to get the parking info and as I walked to the restaurant I processed my transaction/payment for the parking space. My parking was paid for at 1:35 and they towed me at 1:39 claiming they didn’t see a payment in the system when they checked at 1:34 (right as the transaction was processing). I believe the tow truck was sitting and waiting for me to get out and tow right as I left the lot - yet they still made me pay $185 to get my car back. Not to mention half of my Sunday was hijacked by this incident costing me to miss another class which now costs me another $35. They are predatory and they know it. Multiple articles have been written about it

      I paid $20+ to park in a lot for a restaurant that I wanted to try. Unfortunately apparently I needed to extend my parking time and pay even more and I missed the text to do so. Was towed by advanced towing and wow they were super rude about getting my car back. Surprised that ***** has to contract with such a terrible company - kinda pathetic. The woman I had to deal with was rude and there was a random child riding their bike around the lot giving my friend a hard time. Also shocking they can charge $185 for someone whos already paid to park and patronized the business of the lot they are trolling.

      On May 21, 2023 at 7:02PM, I used the ********** app to pay for three hours of parking in Arlington, VA. On May 21, 2023 at 7:18PM, Advanced Towing Company towed my car despite the fact that parking was paid for until 10:00PM. They demanded $195 to release the car, despite the fact that I showed them the ********** receipt to prove that I had paid for parking. Advanced Towing Company had no right to tow my car after I followed the rules and paid for parking. Then, they scammed me out of $195.00 which they refused to refund. I have tried to resolve this with Advanced Towing Company by phone (they claim to have a website, but they don't), however the woman in the office is rude and has hung up on me. Why is Advance Towing Company still in business? They need to be shut down for victimizing law-abiding citizens with their predatory towing practices.

      The incident occurred on July 4th, 2023 at the parking lot in **************** at Clarendon, VA. I arrived to the parking at 1:05pm and I used my *********** App and paid $15 for a period of two hours from 1:07pm to 3:07pm (Receipt attached). When I came back to get my car, I realized that it was not there and it was towed by Advanced Towing Company LLC. When I went to pick up my car, I wanted to dispute my case because in fact I paid for the parking spot and I wanted to know the reason of why my car was towed. The Advanced Towing employee (**) in a very rude way said that I did not pay in time. I asked him to show me their supporting evidence, and he showed me their computer screen which showed that they arrived to the parking lot at 1:06pm (manually inputted), and showed me a picture of my car in the lot at 1:07pm which was the time I paid for my parking. I explained to him that it must have be a misunderstanding because I paid at 1:07pm, and their evidence also shows my car in the parking lot before getting towed at 1:07pm. However, he explained that by 1:06pm the park mobile payment was not processed so they took my car. The timeline of me paying in the app and they spotting my car was less than 1 minute. I told them I wanted to dispute my case but ** told me I had to pay first to get my car. I had to pay a total of $185 which included a $30 Holiday Charge and a $20 fuel surcharge for a distance of 1.2 miles ******* maps directions attached). ** told me that If I wanted to dispute the case I had to call the manager **** the next day. I called and asked to talk with **** and the lady on the phone told me that **** was not available and after hearing my case in a very rude and dismissive way she said the company did everything right and that I had to call *********** to dispute my case. I feel my incident was unlawful and a fraudulent practice, and that Advanced Towing Company LLC just stole me $185 and get away it.

      Advanced towing towed my vehicle when I was inside the store then fabricated a receipt that claimed that it was before the closing time of the business.

      I am an **** **** driver and I parked in the ********* quick pick up parking spot at ************Mall. I had accepted a pick up order for both ********* and ***** *******. I went to pick up the ************* order first and once I went to pick up the ********* order I noticed my vehicle had been towed. After cancelling the pickup orders since I no longer could deliver them, I called the towing company and tried to resolve the issue and explain that I was an **** **** driver and had only been inside for a few minutes at *************. I was cussed at and told that the time did not matter because once I did not enter through the ********* store they could tow me. I again tried to resolve the matter when I picked up my vehicle and paid the charge. I was once again met with foul language and no resolution. I have filed a complaint with the Attorneys Generals office of Arlington VA.

      Parked the car outside the Church. There was still a minute left before the parking was not valid. I saw the car get towed in front of my eyesI told him to stop and not tow, since it was still before 11pm. He sped up and kept driving. The towing car was also driving very dangerously. When I got there to pay for the charges, the two ladies at the counter were rude and racist. The were shouting and didnt tell me where my car was after I paid. It was illegal towing, as many have already identified in the other complaints. Nonetheless, I will be taking action in small claims court.****

      Today (2/19/23) a friends car got towed from my apartment building after being parked in a temporary space for less than 15 minutes. Regardless, we went to pick up the car and to pay and had to deal with an extremely rude employee- and they charged us more than the posted prices on the side of the building- they charged $195 which does not add up to the posted prices, and when I asked the employee working she was just rude and didnt help.

      Wrongfully Towed-10/23 Ticket number **** was towed from a reserved spot- There was no number on the spot at the time of towing- A week after this incident the apartment complex repainted the number- Advanced towing had no visual reason to tow the car that night. Seeking 185.00 for refund. As you can clearly see- two of the pictures are of "SPOT **" that is not marked- the last picture is after the apartment complex repainted after we sought a refund.

      On December 10th, 2022 my vehicle was towed for being parked in a private lot. Upon recovering my vehicle from Advanced Towing Co LLC, they upcharged me, claiming my vehicle, a *** ****, was 10000lbs. The **** and ** which describe the maximum towing and hauling capacity of the vehicle are 10000lbs. The EW of the vehicle is 4960lbs. Even after showing my registration and attempting to explain this they refused to let me exit the lot without paying the $275 they demanded. Furthermore, this amount is in violation of Virginia code 46.2 - 1223 for an initial charge for hookup and towing of a passenger vehicle.
