    In August 2023, BBB began receiving customer complaints about Clay Corner Inn. Complainants allege that Clay Corner Inn cancelled or refused to honor reservations and that customers were being told that the Inn was overbooked. Consumers also allege that refunds were not being issued as promised. BBB has received numerous complaints in May 2024 where customers have informed BBB that they received the following message from the company’s owner: 

    “The information and circumstances that have come to light this week regarding the overbookings at Clay Corner Inn for graduation weekend are as distressing to us as they are to those adversely affected. Neither the property owner nor the owner of the company who manages the Inn’s daily operations were aware of these overbookings for this weekend until this week. They occurred outside the Inn’s standard booking platform and other standard operating procedure. They did not appear in the Inn’s books, records, or accounts. The individual responsible for these overbookings has been disassociated from the company and the Inn’s operations entirely. We are working diligently with the company’s attorneys investigating this matter and working on a resolution. Regrettably, for those affected who understandably want immediate answers and resolution, the ongoing press of this normally busy graduation weekend has our entire staff consumed each day. With the limited information known to us at present, it is taking us time to gather and verify information concerning all those affected. We are asking that anyone adversely impacted by this, who believed they had made a reservation for this weekend but have discovered that was not the case, please send an email containing your complete contact information and any supporting documentation you have to Jenna Roseberry at [email protected]. Similarly, for anyone who believes they have a reservation at the Inn for any future date and who would like to confirm the same, please reach out to Jenna with the same information, and we will be happy to confirm your reservation against our books and records. We truly love our community and guests and regret entirely that this has occurred. We are working as quickly as we can to reach a resolution for all involved.”

    Customers who are experiencing issues with their reservation or difficulty receiving a refund may file a complaint with the BBB. In addition, customers need to file a report with the Blacksburg Police Department at https://www.blacksburg.gov/departments/departments-l-z/police/file-a-police-report.
