I would not recommend this company at all. I inquired out about owner liability insurance as I own a horse, and was comparing quotes from companies. I was told to fill out a form, and they would get back to me with the quote. I did this, and received the quote. I decided to not go with this company. I am now receiving several emails/phone calls/letters stating that I am going to collections on a bill that I never agreed to (I wasn't even aware I had coverage). I reached out to "my agent" who reported that it was an error on their end and I was all set, however I am still getting calls/letters that I am going to collections (which by the way, it took this agent weeks to get back to me as she reported my emails were suddenly "going to spam"- we were emailing consistently prior to this when she saw a prospective client in me. I have never in my life been told that a company I am not a client for is sending to collections for a service I did not agree to. I am making sure I tell all of my fellow equestrians not to do business with this company.Markel Insurance Company

1 starMy area was hit hard by hurricane ******. While my home survived without damage, the vast majority of the city lost power. Its been a week and some places are still without power. I filed a claim to replace the hundreds of dollars I lost in groceries and was told power failure is not covered. Thanks Markel! I am now getting quotes from other insurance companies.Review fromChristine B

I was a client of theirs since 2012. I sold my 7 year old gelding in ****** in 2024 and informed them immediately by email. ********************* was the Oregon representative. Apparently, due to Oregon State Law they still had the right to charge me even after I sold the horse. They sent me to collections for $400 and their State Rep didn't even bother to give me a heads up. I can afford to pay the bill but the principle is not right. Will never use them again.Markel Insurance Company

I had Horse insurance through this company I made monthly payments. They never covered anything everything they said they would cover they found a loophole not to cover and were not truthful when I signed up. They paid for none of my claims and now have turned me over to a collection agency because I canceled my policy before my last payment for service that I never used. I told him when I canceled the policy to forget everything, but they kept billing me and now are trying to collect on something That I dont oweMarkel Insurance Company

Garbage company staffed by garbage humans. I was the victim of a hit and run but their scummy claims adjuster, *********************, cant even bother to email me for a week after our first phone call let alone actually help me. *****************, Manager, Sales and Service Solutions, is also as useless as a football bat and never responds to emails. This is a horrible company and continues to violate laws as related to claims. Filed a claim under a Commercial Liability policy as a result of a lawsuit that was filed. Lawsuit was provided to company. They choose to deny the claim with no investigation- they did not talk to the party named in the lawsuit. They did not talk to the agent that issued the policy. You have insurance to protect your business when someone falsly sues you. A letter (email) was sent to the company on 5/21/2024. Per Statute- An insurer must promptly acknowledge pertinent communications with respect to claims arising under insurance policies. (WI ADM **** Ins 6.11 (3)(a)(1)). This needs to be done within 10 consecutive days. They have decided not to respond. Further, a DOI complaint was filed and guess what- they again decided not to respond to the compalint in the required timeframe. I would run as far away from this company as possible.Markel Insurance Company

Markel Insurance Company disputes that ********************* is the original consumer as required by BBB guidelines as a prerequisite to submitting a customer review. Therefore, Mr. ******* review is improper and should not be posted to the BBB report for Markel Insurance Company. Markel Insurance Company issued several commercial general liability policies to an individual, *********************** DBA: ******** Tumbling and Gymnastics, and Mr. ******* review pertains to an insurance coverage dispute between Markel Insurance Company and ***********************. Accordingly, Markel Insurance Company respectfully requests BBB to remove Mr. ******* posting as he is not a party to the insurance contract between Markel Insurance Company and *********************** and he lacks the proper status under BBB guidelines to submit a customer review.Markel Insurance Company

Markel Insurance Company properly investigated coverage for the lawsuit and timely explained the lack of coverage in a written letter to its insured. Markel Insurance Company timely responded to the complaint filed with the **************** of the ************ of Insurance, which has taken no action regarding this matter. Although Markel Insurance Company regrets any dissatisfaction with its decision on coverage, it has honored the terms of the insurance contract and the limitations on the specific coverage that was purchased.Review fromJennifer B

It's been almost 4 years since an income audit was performed on our General Liability policy for our small business. We, nor our agent, received any correspondence regarding a balance due until recently...via a collections attorney's call. We were told that admittedly they had had communication issues in regards to notifying us of the balance due. However, they were unwilling to discuss negotiating the amount due. Typically if there was a discrepancy on numbers we would be notified within 30 days of the audit. We were not, and therefore moved on thinking there were no discrepancies. We are not questioning their numbers. Our major concern is that had we been notified in a timely manner we would have been able to take advantage of subsidies such as PPP loans and ERC's (which are no longer available to us) to offset the debt. Being a small business this debt makes a huge impact on our bottom line. Not only that, we will have to pay our accountant to redo our taxes for the affected years. Additionally, they have side-stepped paying our broker their fee and they've delayed the recognition of this revenue on their books during the pandemic. It seems strategic. We are looking for a pennies on the dollar settlement here. In our 20 years of business we've never dealt with a vendor acting this irresponsibly. These are very unprofessional business practices on Markel's part to say the least. Being as this doesn't seem to be an isolated incident, it sure seems prime for a class action lawsuit.Markel Insurance Company

We are sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with the handling of your policy. Since the premium is based off of gross sales/receipts, an audit was necessary to confirm the information as provided in the policy provisions. We hope to reach an amicable resolution with you. We have attempted to contact you and ask that you please reach out to us to discuss available options. Contact information is provided in the letter you received.Review fromHugo G

I recently had a disappointing experience with Markel Insurance that I feel compelled to share. After deciding not to renew my policy with their company, I was surprised to learn about an alleged income audit three years later, through a collections agency. What added to my frustration was the lack of communication and transparency throughout this process. When I approached my insurance broker, they too were unaware of any audit performed, which was concerning as they should have been notified and involved, especially considering their involvement in collecting a small percentage fee from the audit. As a General Contractor, I expected a higher level of professionalism and reliability from an insurance provider. Unfortunately, my experience with Markel has left me unable to recommend them for General Liability insurance.Prospective clients, especially General Contractors, may want to explore other options for their insurance needs, considering my experience with Markel.Feel free to modify the review based on your specific details and sentiments. Remember to stay factual and avoid making any statements that could be considered defamatory. Providing constructive feedback can be helpful for both the company and potential customers who may come across your review.Markel Insurance Company

We are sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with the handling of your policy. Since the premium is based off of gross sales/receipts, an audit was necessary to confirm the information as provided in the policy provisions. Markel received the signed audit worksheet back from you and completed the audit with the final audit results being sent to your agent during the first quarter of the year following policy expiration.
