Herzing takes seriously any complaint submitted by one of its students and wants every student to succeed. At the same time, Herzing must maintain academic integrity by consistently applying academic standards as an integral part of its responsibilities under its accreditation requirements and state licensing obligations.

On September 16, 2022, Herzing sent a communication to Ms. *********** offering resolution to her concerns at no additional charge. She is repeating the course and has been provided with resources to support her learning. Ms. *********** has retained legal counsel who has been in communication with Herzing University legal counsel to resolve her concerns moving forward.

In 2008 I was looking to go to school so I could make more than minimum wage. Herzing pressured me to signing documents when I wasn't sure what field I wanted to study. They told me it didn't matter & I could just change majors later &their career department will help get a great paying job after graduation. I was only supposed to have about *****k in **** from the start. I started business management but wasn't happy with it so I changed to computer science but they didn't mention extra costs. After some classes in computer science, I was finding myself not doing well. I tried to get help to be able to continue but the teacher would not help explain anything to me so I could understand. Unfortunately, it just became too confusing for me to do well in computer science. Since I wasn't doing well and not getting help, I talked to Herzing about the graphic design ************ concerns about finding a job in that field but they again ensured me they would find me a great paying job after graduation before I had to start paying back any of my loans & that I would have no problems after graduation to pay the loan off. So I changed to graphic design. Again, they didn't mention the extra costs or even of any supplies needed, like a digital slr camera for the photography course. So I ended up being completely unprepared for some classes. When you are in classes online, you teach yourself. After I graduated in 2012 (4 years of school and 100k in ****!) I went to the career counselors and all they did was pull jobs off indeed and send them to me. They had no other job opportunities and all of the ones they were sending me were not for much money. I had a family to support and cannot take care of them and pay back 100k in **** while only making $14 an hour when Herzing told me I would be making 50k. They lie to get your *********** have large amount of **** that you will never be able to pay off. You end up making the same amount of money as you did before your education! SCAM!

      Customer response

      Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

All they are showing is career services sending me things from Indeed. I can and did look on indeed myself. ****** services didn't do anything to help me.
On the appendix supplied it states all career services did was connect me with the indeed job board and try to set me up with an account with Indeed. Also, they just sent me job postings from Indeed. Someone right out of high schhol can and knows to look on Indeed so how is this a help? Also, I already made a resume in one of my classes and then career services tried to have me make a new one.
I already had an indeed account and was looking for jobs off there myself. I went to career services because I was told they could help me and provide me with much more than just things off Indeed. This is not the case!
I got my own job off my own connection through LinkedIn and called Herzing to tell them I no longer wanted their career assistance since it wasn't helping me and all they were doing was things I could do myself. ****** services has nothing other than stuff off indeed and nothing they sent me was for the amount of money they told me I would be making after graduation.  This is not career services when I can go on indeed myself and they did not provide me with jobs in my field which they claimed there were tons in my area starting at $50k a year.
After I graduated, I was only able to get jobs that paid $13-14 an hour - way below 50K a year! That is what I was already making without college. Herzing told me that after I graduated, they would be able to help me get a job with pay of $50k or better due to the degree I was getting so I could easily pay back my debt. This was not case and there are no jobs like that in my area and I cannot easily pay back my debt. I would need to move, and no one told me that after I graduated, I would need to relocate in order to get a job that paid at least $50k. Herzing lies and embellishes the truth and what they can provide students with just to get them to sign the papers and get their money. I told them several times of my concerns and that I didn't want a large debt I couldn't pay back after graduation especially since I was a working mom trying to take care of my family. They should relieve me of my debt for their lies as I would have never even enrolled if I knew I would be making the same amount of money after graduation. The whole point of going to school is to make more money so I could have less debt and all Herzing did was give me more debt. $80k in debt is a lot for a degree that a lot of people are just learning off ******** Wish I had done that. They really need to change their admissions and be sure they are explaining things to people 100% instead of just pushing to get that paperwork signed.
Bottom line - when I signed up for college, I was assured I would be making more than I was when I started and I actually came out having to start at the bottom again, less than what I was already making.

      Regards,

      *************************

I .attend Herzing University online and receive pell grants and loans to pay for their rather high tuition. I have no choice but to have to live off what is leftover after tuition is paid. The amounts are not much and it is very hard to make them stretch until the next stipend. This month, my funds were dispersed on the 19th of May, and Herzing took their cut immediately. However, it is now the 25th, almost a week later, and they are taking their sweet time sending me my money that I need to pay my utilities to stay in school. I've sent emails and called to inform them of my desperation, and they don't care. They said they have 2 weeks to get my funds to me. I don't understand this rational. This is my money they are holding on to even after they got theirs. a week ago. I am not a big university but I matter. My needs matter.

      To whom this may concern,

Thank you for making Herzing University aware of the complaint and giving us an opportunity to respond to *********************************. Her concerns have been reviewed and investigated.

********************** received her stipend on 5/25/22,  which was six (6) calendar days after the disbursement of funds on 5/19/2022. We attempt to return the funds as quickly as possible; however, the ********** of ********* stipulates that all Title IV funds in excess of charges be returned to the student within 14 calendar days.  Herzing University was within this requirement and in line with our standard average for processing stipends for all students. Our records indicate that Ms. ********** stipend was processed timely.

Should ********************** have additional questions regarding her concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I started Herzing University in April 2021, going for the 8 month billing and coding specialist diploma. I was told I would be finished December 2021. I was a full time student online. Some time during the year they switched me to a part time student but we're still collecting money for me being a full time student. I did talk with a woman in January of 2022 I believe and she told me through texts that I had 3 more classes still plus the 1 class I was already doing. I had no clue I was only doing part time but the fact that they switched me to 1 class every 8 weeks should've tipped me off. I took out student loans which ended up being around $6,000 and I was told in the beginning I would only need around $4,000.

      To whom this may concern,

Thank you for making Herzing University aware of the complaint and giving us an opportunity to respond to ***********************************. Her concerns have been reviewed and investigated.

********************** enrolled into the Diploma in Insurance Billing and Coding Specialist program in May 2021.  The program is 8 months in length for full-time students, but the program length is contingent upon no course fails.********************** failed a course during her first term in the program and this caused the program length to be extended. When ********************** failed the course, she was notified that her course schedule was revised via email (7/1/2021). She was moved to a part-time status, but this was due to the failed course and course availability.

The failed course also had an impact on her financial aid,and ********************** was sent a revised financial aid offer notification (7/2/2021) that included changes to her financial aid package. Ms. ********** student loan amounts totaled $4,848, all of which were accepted by the student in her student aid portal.
