I received an unsolicited letter from Debt Advisors of America (identified in small print as DAA only) that deliberately mimics a debt collection notice. The language and formatting; references to major creditors, a ************************** an official-looking notice number, and urgent warnings about failure to respond. All crafted to provoke panic. Nowhere on the envelope or the letter itself does it clearly explain that *** is not a lender, not a debt collector, and not affiliated with the banks it lists. That disclosure is buried in the fine print, and even then it is evasive. When I called to ask who they were, the representative provided the company name, and did eventually confirm that they are a debt relief company not a debt collector or consolidator. But they seemed to be oblivious to the misleading nature of the letter I described, in spite of the fact that their firm has numerous complaints regarding this specific letter. This kind of opaque communication is dangerous. It exploits fear and confusion. Nor does it disclose that *** is not making this offer for free, that they charge their own fees for providing services, and that the terms of debt relief plans can be much more strict than remaining with your unsecured debt.A less savvy recipient might think this is a legitimate creditor or collections notice and call in a panic, ready to hand over personal information. The letter leverages the language of legal urgency without the accountability of being an actual legal notice. That ambiguity feels deliberate.Scammers could use nearly identical tactics with even fewer scruples. The fact that *** operates so close to that line, while claiming to offer help, undermines trust. If you're actually helping people with debt, you shouldn't have to scare or mislead them to start the conversation. I believe this kind of marketing is deceptive and harmful, and that the BBB should investigate and hold *** accountable for these practices.Business Response

Business does not identify itself other than initials. Does not provide a website or email. Intentionally uses confusing language to make the recipient think they have 10 days to set up a loan settlement with them or incur financial penalties. This company is going to great lengths to confuse and scare recipients into opening an account with them. This is incredibly predatory. Based on the other complaints on this page, there's no way they should have an A+ rating. That is a complete farce.Business Response

That is unfortunate. I see that this is essentially what you say to everyone. Your company has not bothered to make changes despite these numerous complaints. You should consider finding a new job, because I'm sure you're a fine person and you didn't grow up wanting to defend this company and these practices to upset people on the internet. It's obvious that your business is happy to continue to take advantage of people's confusion. Whether that's an elderly person, someone who's disabled, or someone who speaks English as a second language. This is purposeful and deceitful, and you should not be able to hide behind the threatening implications of your letters and misrepresenting your association with these lenders. Your tactics, down to your response to my complaint are part of a carefully curated package to prey on the most vulnerable members of society. It's ableist, ageist, and racist.Business Response

I signed up with a credit card debt solution company on 2/4/25. Afterwards I realized that I wouldnt always have the money they were charging each month of $328.70 for 3 years. So, I emailed them, and called them the same day to cancel, and told them the reason. They said no problem, and even emailed me the cancelation notice. Then on 2/14/25 they took the $328.70 out of my checking account. Please help me get my money back.Business Response

I received my most recent letter from Debt Advisors of America last week, dated for 01/30/2025, notice number D2125-57395. I've received several others and simply ignored them, but after receiving this one, I decided to look deeper into it and come to find out, I'm not the only one receiving these unsolicited letters. The letter I received asks me to please contact their office within 10 days to discuss adjustments for my credit accounts. It goes on to list just about every credit card company in the ** and says if I have an account with any of them or other lenders, I may be entitled to a settlement of my current outstanding balance. Then it says that if I don't respond and miss my minimum payment, interest will accrue on my accounts. They give operating ours, a program example, and list their phone number several times. Nowhere on this piece of paper do they ever say their company name, the only mention of it is an abbreviation, "DAA" at the bottom in fine print. I had to research to find information about them and was led here. This was an unsolicited letter, one of many I've received and never responded to, and quite frankly, I'm sick of getting them. I'm not going to fall for what is so clearly a scam. This company doesn't deserve to be a part of the BBB or have the rating that they do, based on my experience and the other experiences I've read about them. If I receive another letter from them, I will be reporting them to the authorities. Do NOT contact me again, by phone or by mail.Business Response

I received an unsolicited letter from "Debt Advisors of America," which is only mentioned in the fine print, as the letter claims to be from the ************************** The letter states that I may qualify for a debt settlement program for accounts with banks like ****************, Bank of America, and others. I feel it uses tactics about accruing penalties and interest to pressure me into calling their phone number, ************. However, the letter does not specify any debts, provide legitimate company details, or offer an option to unsubscribe from future mailings. The letter implies associations with major financial institutions but provides no evidence of any actual affiliation, which is misleading and potentially deceptive. Additionally, the fine print uses vague language to deny responsibility while soliciting consumers for their program.Business Response

Worked with agent **** ********* in June 2024 and eventually choose to have Debit Advisor of America help me with the $55k in credit card debit starting in July 2024. I was advised to stop all payments and communication with credit card companies. **** told me he would work with my creditors to reduce amount owed and then what I paid per month would go into a "savings account " with ******************* and then the creditors would take their monthly payment (worked out via ***** per month. Check in with **** on July 8, ************************************** a call back, that was the last communication. I have texted several times, left voice-mail and even left multiple voice-mail on the company's number which I got directly from the website. I always get the recording of all agents are busy, which then turns into the line disconnecting about about 5 minutes. I have yet to hear from this company and now I am thinking this company is a scam. I have also received a lawsuit letter from one of my creditors and yet this company still isn't hasn't responded to me. Any help would be appreciated, however I will not be provided an account number over a public forum.Business Response

I am writing to file a formal complaint against Debt Advisors of America concerning a letter I received from them on August 18, 2024. The letter appeared to be a debt collection notice urging me to respond "regarding the adjustments of your credit accounts". The letter listed several banks with which I do business and again urged me to respond within 10 days under a section with **Failure to Respond** in bold letters. After looking closer, I realized the letter is a deceitful marketing solicitation. Buried in the small print at the very bottom of the letter is the company name - Debt Advisors of America. It was not listed or mentioned anywhere else in the letter. This notice led me to believe I had accounts in default when in actuality all of my credit accounts are in good standing. This letter is deceptive, intentionally misleading, and appears to be a scare tactic to con unsuspecting people out of giving their personal information and/or signing up for their program. I do not know how this company obtained my information, and I do not want to receive any additional correspondence from them. Any further contact from them will be considered harassment. I request that the Better Business Bureau investigate this matter and take appropriate action against Debt Advisors of America to prevent them from continuing these deceptive practices.Business Response

In ********* Debt advisors of America was supposed to assist with my ****** dollars in credit card debt. They advised me to stop paying my creditors and to ignore any calls or attempts to collect the debt. They said they would handle everything. Well eventually I began getting threatening letters in the mail about lawsuits. When I contacted your company about these letters I was told that it would all be handled. In late 2021 I got a letter requesting my appearance at a court date for a judgement from one of my creditors. At this point I contacted an attorney and was advised bankruptcy was the best option. Prior to all of this my payments were all on time and my credit was fine. I was just drowning in payments and interest. I thought Debt Advisors of America was going to help relieve the financial burden by making one payment. In the weeks and times following bankruptcy, I tried to contact DAA and could not get an explanation. I paid them thousands of dollars, wrecked my credit and still ended up filing bankruptcy. Where is my money? Every time I call I get the run around, get hung up on or some excuse. I just want a refund!!Business Response

I was able to locate your Client ID, it is *************.
Your account was cancelled by your Service Provider due to an NSF payment. However, I am looking into the status of your account further with them as you should have received a refund of the funds in your escrow account at the time of cancellation.
