On April 5, 2023, the Washington State’s Attorney General entered into an agreement with Pilgrim’s Pride Corp. to settle its part in a lawsuit brought against 19 chicken producers headquartered throughout the country.
The lawsuit accused the defendants of a wide-ranging illegal conspiracy to inflate and manipulate prices, rig contract bids and coordinate industry supply reductions to maximize profits. The lawsuit asserted that the companies engaged in practices in violation of the Washington Consumer Protection Act and Washington antitrust laws.
To settle this matter, Pilgrim’s Pride Corp will pay $11 million in restitution and each of the companies involved agreed to conduct internal training and certify that they have corporate policies that ensure the companies follow state and federal antitrust laws. Under the terms of the consent decrees, if any of them engage in price-fixing or other anticompetitive conduct in the next five years, the Attorney General’s Office can go to court to seek civil penalties.
