My cat Macy was 17 years old and weighed 4 pounds. She was vomiting, hungry but losing weight and when I got home from work she was gasping for air, and she kept falling over. I called this vet and talked to somebody who had the personality of a door knob. She told me they do euthanize. I called back before leaving the house and asked how much it was. She told me it was $180. So I took 200 bucks with me and drove to Plainville. The doctor came in and looked at her quickly. He checked her teeth and felt her abdomen and agreed that she was in bad shape. That one minute was $160. I was then given the information that euthanasia was an additional $180 if I wanted to stay in the room. If I wanted to just leave her, it would only be $50. I asked what the difference was and they told me that they for $50 they do not sedate but inject the medicine directly into their veins. For $25 they would bring my cat body to me so I could take her home. But if I left her there to be cremated, it was $95. I explained that I called and was told it was $180. She left the room and I heard them talking directly outside the door saying “tell her to apply for CareCredit. Does she have anybody else that can help her?“ I also heard the doctor tell the staff to make sure I paid the 160 if I decided to take Macy home. This was not about the money this was about the lack of transparency, my cat was in terrible shape and did not need an exam. I was told it was a quality of life exam. I was extraordinarily angry, and wanted to take the cat and leave, but after looking at her shape, I realize that it would be the wrong thing to do and I had her put down there against my wishes. When I drove home, I called other other emergency vets. I asked them how they handled things and they were shocked to hear that there was a difference in price whether or not you stayed in the room. And more shocked to hear that I was charged for an exam when it was clear as day that this cat needed to be put to sleep.
