During the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in 2021, the City of Fort Lauderdale parking facility (Sebastian Lot) which I chose to park in for the event advertised a flat rate for boat show parking in the amount of $30 for the duration between 6am and 6pm. This was clearly posted using a large decal on the kiosk. However, the kiosk itself did not offer this rate on its user menu interface, but only the standard rate for a maximum period of 4 hours. Given the hour of my arrival I had no other option than to oblige by the standard fee, assuming that the city would honor its advertisement given the lack of menu options at the kiosk. When I returned to my vehicle before 6pm I found a citation issued to me for violating the 4-hour maximum parking time. When I confronted the parking officer about the citation, he acknowledged my complaint about the boat show parking advertisement, and informed me that the City kiosks in different areas surrounding the boat show were reported to have similar issues. However, even while he issued the citation a short time prior to my returning to my vehicle, he could do nothing to void the citation. He advised me to contact the City Parking Department the following day to resolve the issue, which given this was a Friday I could not follow through with. Long story short, I received a FINAL NOTICE (my only notice) 60 days later, prompting me to contact the City Parking Department. After politely explaining the circumstances surrounding my citation, the representative was rude while explaining that there was nothing that the city could do to resolve the problem, but that I was solely responsible, insisting that even if there was a programming error it was my responsibility to report it immediately by calling the City. As a result of this outcome, I would strongly encourage future parking customers of the Sebastian Lot or others throughout the city of Fort Lauderdale, to be diligent and avoid parking at these lots if the user interface does not align itself with the advertising on its kiosks. Do not assume that the advertisement will be honored. Given the response that I received from the parking department representative I would have zero confidence in that the city will share any responsibility in a similar situation. I take responsibility for not contacting the City the Monday following the issue of the citation, but this should not absolve the City of Fort Lauderdale of any accountability for the error of their own doing.
