I have been a writer my entire life, made my living as a writer and continue to write now that I'm retired. I have published countless articles and essays but would have never attempted to publish a book unless most of the process, beyond writing the book itself, was not handled for me by somebody else. Most of the steps, while new to me, were certainly understandable. I was as content as my personality would allow me as I encountered each successive part of the process. I am completely satisfied and will publish two more books with Xulon.

As a first-time author, I have enjoyed and appreciated the overall professional support from all the Xulon Press team who helped put my book together, Son of the Heartland, On the Way to the Promised Land. These men and women have been unfailingly helpful in their specific disciplines, from account management and accounting to continuous editing oversight, photo editing, cover design and other image work, and marketing and quality control. My concerns over alleged missteps by Xulon in prior authors' experiences disappeared quickly after working with several Xulon teammates, especially the editing team and the account manager. A friend of mine had her book published by them. I was astonished at the poor editing. I found numerous inconsistencies and blatant errors. Scripture references were always abbreviated, but sometimes they had a period, sometimes not. Scripture quotations were not consistent. Dashes varied (em dash, single dash, double dash). The lyrics to a song were quoted without permission. This only scratches the surface.

It is highly unusual for our professional editors to leave the issues you stated in one of our author's manuscripts. Depending on what editorial service is chosen by our author, it is the editor's job to read, review, correct, polish, recommend improvements, and in some cases, make the improvements for the author. It would not be prudent, from a business sense, to knowingly allow a manuscript to be published as you have described.However, there are times when an author is unable or unwilling to pay for the service that meets their manuscript's need. We will not push someone to purchase services - we simply offer them. In addition, there are some instances where the issue is a difference of opinion or creative expression rather than a departure from the style guide. When this happens, we open a discuss and, ultimately, honor the wishes of our author.Not having the specific details of your friend's account, I cannot speak on this case, but I do welcome a call from your friend/our author to ensure they were ultimately taken care of. Please direct them to call their account representative or ask for the customer service manager. Thank you for bringing this situation to our attention.
