When we arrived at this GHC I noticed there were a number of kitties up for adoption that were born in early April that had not been adopted yet. We spoke to Nan Hugues who is the primary foster/adoption representative, that we are interested in fostering and hopefully adopting kittens. She asked us to foster three very young kittens and pick them up at another foster parent's house. She said it would be a great favor to her if we did this. When we arrived, this foster parent told us she currently fosters about 20 kitties and one recently died after jumping from a balcony in her house. She gave us the three young kitties. We were given virtually no information from Nan or the foster parent as to their ages, health and other pertinent information.
For a day or so they were all playful and happy. On the second day, one of the kittens became lethargic and withdrawn. My wife contacted Nan who suggested giving this kitty chicken broth and watching her closely. We did that and also told Nan we were willing to take the kitty to a vet hospital. Several hours later we found this kitty in distress and tossing and turning. My wife called Nan and volunteered to take the kitty to a vet hospital. She told us to return the kitty to the original foster parent which we did immediately. We learned the next day from Nan that this kitty died and was not taken to the vet hospital. Nan also mentioned to my wife that this kitten had a "neurological" condition at birth, but she did not mention to us when we agreed to foster it.
Thereafter, Nan's attitude changed toward us. Her attitude implied we were responsible for this kitty's death even though we had it for less than 48 hours and we volunteered to take it immediately to the vet hospital for treatment. Nan asked us to return the other two kitties to her for the following weekend since we were leaving town for a short getaway. She promised to return them to us the following Monday after they got their first shots and checkup from the vet. On a Thursday evening, I met Nan at the GHS with a bag of kitty toys and food to use while we were away. Nan asked us to provide these toys and food as the kitties were probably used to the items and food. Her attitude toward me was very odd and strange and I felt something was amiss. Unfortunately I was right.
On Monday, Nan told my wife that the vet was all out of vaccines and she would keep them for another week until they arrived. This response seemed odd as we are available to continue to foster these kitties. My wife then texted Nan why we could not keep the two kitties until the vaccines were expected to arrive next week. My wife also communicated to Nan that we are willing to take the kitties to the vet for their shots and check up. After all, we signed an agreement, in part, to take the kittens to the vet as part of our foster parent's obligation. It is now Thursday. We have not heard back from Nan. . . . nothing but crickets. My wife texted Nan to return our bag with kitty toys and food. No response. It is abundantly clear at this time Nan has no intention of letting us foster these kitties, and is refusing to respond to my wife's texts and telephone messages. It is also unclear whether Nan has any intention of returning the bag and kitty toys that we loaned to her.
We have adopted and cared for stray kittens and cats for the past 33 years. We do not deserve to be treated in this unprofessional and non responsive manner. This experience has been sad and quite disappointing.
