I hired this business to remove flying squirells from my attic and take measures to prevent further wildlife from getting in. We agreed upon installation of gutter guards and ridge gaurds. Per contract, his work was warrantied and guaranteed. This contractor was paid twice, first for the initial installation of these product, and another time for removal and reinstallation after our roof was replaced. Soon after he completed the second installation, I noticed that he did not properly cap the gutters which allows wildlife to enter and causes clogging. I have made multiple attempts to contact this contractor over the past year via email, text, and phone and he will not return my calls. I have tried to identify other contractors to correct the issue and recieved quotes of $1000-$1200.

      Hello,

Regarding complaint ID ********,  the company did contact me but refused to provide the $500 refund I requested in order to pay another contractor to finish the job. Instead, the owner insisted on completing the work himself. I allowed him to do so and he spent 2 days working. After he stated he had finished, I noticed that one section of the gutter looked as if it had not been corrected. I contacted the business owner who said he was unable to reach that section to make the correction. I now have to hire a new contractor who is able to do the work in order to prevent wildlife from entering the gutter system. He has not provided me with any other solutions. Essentially, he charged me for work that he was incapable of completing.

I appreciate your assistance in this matter,

      Background: Initial Inspection
-Customer had flying squirrels, not birds.
-1year warranty on exclusion for flying squirrels (October/November 2022)
-Customer was quoted exclusion techniques for the ridge cap (~215 linear ft) and construction gap (gap between the roof decking and the top of the fascia board).
-Due to the roof being in such bad shape at inspection (2022) drip edge was not an option (shingles would have been cracked or split during install and i didn’t want to damage them). The shingles were so brittle that we decided to use gutter guards (~162 linear ft) to seal off the gutters for flying squirrels to prevent them from entering into the construction gap of the home. *It is my understanding is that this is not the current issue.* Birds were not a part of the original issue. This is a completely different issue than what the original job was for. Birds and flying squirrels require completely different tactics.

To address the removal and reinstall after roof was replaced:

When the roof on the customers house was scheduled to have the roof replaced due to storm damage, I came out and removed the ridge guard on the home and the gutter guards. This was done so that we could reinstall the gutter guards. The ridge guard would mostly be able to be reused as well, except the end caps of each ridge cap on the home (12 end caps, ~96ft in material). The old ridge cap was not as wide as the new ridge cap, so those ends required different cuts. He was only charged for the install of the ridge cap on the home because more was needed for those areas. I didn’t feel that it was necessary to charge him for the removal of the old ridge guard or the removal and install of the gutter guards.

      To address the gutter ends:

The gutters on the home were past the end of the fascia/rake board by 2”-4” in all areas. The customer was informed that there were two options:

1: Stop the gutter guards at or just past the edge of the shingles/rake board and install endcaps inside the gutter. This prevented a gap on the back of the gutter.
2: Bring the gutter guards out to the end of the gutter allowing a gap in the back of the gutter.

Option one was decided on by both customer and and business.
Fast forward to now, customer states that birds are getting into the gutters.

I was out of town with a missed call from the customer. Called back a couple days later when I got back in town. He mentioned that birds were getting in the gutters. He asked for me to pay a contractor to fix the issue. I was confused because this was the first I’ve heard about this issue. I declined because I warranty repairs on work, so I’m able to address the issue. Although this current issue with birds was not a part of the original issue dealing with flying squirrels (again, to my knowledge, there are still no issues with flying squirrels), I decided to honor that and go back and fix the gutter guards the best I could (I have been out there on multiple occasions after the original job was completed to tweak a few things that the customer was concerned about and we addressed those).
We agreed that we would go back to the option 2  as previously stated. There were 10-11 corners that needed to be adjusted. While addressing the gutter guards, I took pictures of the gutters and there weren’t any birds nesting in any of the areas of concern. Customer stated that the rainfall had flushed them down the downspout as intended. All of the ends were completed over a 3 day period. The first day we completed 4 before getting rained out because the others that needed to be done had to be accessed from the roof and it was too wet. The second day my help/spotter had to attend a funeral at 1 that day and I didn’t have another spotter for the ridge hook. The last two were completed on day 3 and the customer was verbally happy with all but one.

The one in question is on a part of the home where the gutter line is above an >8/12 pitch. Using either a ladder or ridge hook, that corner wouldn’t have been accessible or visible without risk of falling. I also couldn’t see how far the gutter guard edge was from the end of the gutter. I couldn’t reach that corner to measure, so I removed that 3-4ft piece of gutter guard and added an inch or so (this was approximately the length I had to add to a few of the others, excluding the ones 4” past) to a new piece and installed it back with the end cap on.

The Customer sent me a picture of that corner from a drone above it ~10-20ft and said I had forgot to do that one. I replied by saying I did add an inch or so, but I couldn’t really tell how close it was to the edge due to me not being able to reach or see it. I haven’t received a message back after I responded to the drone photo.
It should be noted that I would have been more than happy to add another inch or so to get it closer to that gutter edge, but he hasn’t requested another option or if he was okay with it as is. Apparently, he has a contractor lined up to fix it.
