Jefferson Electric is like a total scam. It’s ridiculous to charge $250 extra if your lights were disconnected. If I’m having trouble paying the original bill why should I have to pay a extra $250. They do not care about people well being they’re only concerned about their money. It’s sad that it’s only one energy company to choose from in the area. Meanwhile ******* ***** let’s you pay your bill with no extra reconnect fee. They don’t give you a one time pass if it’s the first time your lights have been disconnected. It makes no sense for this company to be so money hungry, with all the bad reviews they have something needs to be done.

      Nature of Complaint:
Ms. ******* feels the cost to reconnect service once the account has been disconnected due to a past due amount is too high.  She also feels that Jefferson Energy Cooperative does not work with our members.

      Facts:
Ms. ******* was subject to service interruption on ********** for a past-due amount. To prevent service interruption a payment must be received at least 1 business day prior to the disconnect date if no payment arrangement is made. On ********** ** **** **, Ms. ******* called Jefferson Energy Cooperative and advised she needed a payment arrangement. Ms. *******’s request for a payment arrangement was approved and she was advised to make a payment by **********. No payment was made on **********. Ms. ******* did not honor her payment arrangement, therefore,  a broken arrangement was entered on the account on ********** and services were disconnected for the past due amount. Ms. ******* was required to pay the past due amount, an additional deposit, and reconnect fee to have the services reconnected. Ms. ******* called on ********** and requested we work with her on the amount required for reconnection. We agreed to bill half of the deposit required to her next bill. Ms. ******* made a payment for the agreed amount and services were reconnected on **********.

      Action Taken:
Following an interruption of service for non-payment, Jefferson Energy Cooperative members are required to have a refundable security deposit totaling two times the highest bill for the previous 12-month period.   Due to the account usage history, the accountholder was required to pay an additional refundable security deposit of $150.00, in addition to the delinquent bill amount, as well as a reconnect fee to have services reconnected.  After 12 months of on-time payments, the member can request one-half of their total security deposit be credited to their account.
If an account is disconnected for non-payment, the reconnection fee is $50 if paid prior to 4:00pm and $100 if paid after 4:00pm.  The member was provided this information in order to avoid the additional $50 fee but a payment was made after the 4:00 pm time frame.
Ms. ******* was also given information regarding JEC’s prepaid program which would significantly reduce the amount required for reconnection.  Ms. ******* declined this option.
