This organization is all about covering for the shams of its members it seems. They want their members to be absolved of liability if they negligently cause patients to get AIDS, it seems for example. They publish "informed consent" that they get all their members to have people sign for orthodontic procedures. It goes beyond unavoidable risks however. It has things like a claim that risk of communicable disease (like HEP A or B?) can't be fully avoided at the dental practice; and therefore all instances of it are just risks of orthodontic treatment. In reality, they CAN prevent these risks. That is: if they keep proper walls between patients. However, this would increase cost of treatment and thereby mean less of their members could afford big ranches or Safari hunts. So as a result they just put the cost of the risk of serious disease on the patients. Who knew AAO is out there preaching a likelihood of getting AIDS from ortho treatment? maybe they should publish more on that instead of just all the "good" they do. It would be better if they just allowed a negligence standard to apply for claims of infection rather than ensuring they can be indemnified for negligence.
