t was Negative 2 degrees outside, their parking lot ‘pay as you exit’ machines did not work. Over 50 vehicles stuck for over an hour trying to exit. At a bare minimum. Company refused to open the gates and let people leave until paying the $30 they charge for an evening of parking. In other circumstances, acceptable. In the circumstances of the current weather, you would think the owner/people the owner puts in charge would have the common sense to change the rule for one night. There were two employees standing out there manning the machines by hand with no gloves, Visibly looking like they were freezing cold and shivering, with 50 more vehicles to manually assist, accumulating to about another two hours in those temperatures, based off of previous wait time and the minimal amount of cars that were able to exit. For the company to make around $2,000. That is pocket change to Ellis parking. Greed? Who is checking in on them, as a company that owns the entire city of Grand Rapids downtown parking? Who is protecting their employees and is anyone holding them accountable for their choices as an extremely profitable business in this city?

Thank you for your note. I am assuming that you parked on our '90 Market' lot, next to the ***********************? I have followed up with our staff to get their assessment. Yes, that frigid night was especially challenging. A repeat rogue customer actually bent the gate so badly, that we were unable to do anything with it, until one or our staff drilled out and replaced the shear pin.

According to our ticketing records, we exited 150 (not 50) vehicles in 50 minutes. And we did have staff at each of the exits, trying to expedite the process. A final challenge was getting customers out of the lot, once they paid. On street traffic was heavy, and the roads were not good.

One final comment from the on site staff member--"As for their concern about us employees, we were there doing our jobs. We wouldn't endanger ourselves."

Please feel free to call me, if you feel further follow up is needed.
