    Pattern of Complaint:

On June 17, 2020, Better Business Bureau recognized a pattern of complaints from consumers regarding the lending services provided by Target Cash Now. Consumers allege borrowing money from the business and having to pay back much more than they borrowed due to the interest rates attached to the loan.

On June 17, 2020, BBB reached out to Target Cash Now with the following suggestions, and requesting a response to the consumer complaints:

    1. The APR should be clearly visible above or next to "Click here to apply" on your website
    2. Your website should clearly show a consumer the full amount they will be required to pay if they borrow “X” amount of money, example:

    “$500 Loan Paid Bi-weekly

    10 Month Term

    21 Bi-weekly Payments of $140.22

    725% APR

    Total Payment $2,804.40”

On July 06, 2020, Target Cash Now responded to Better Business Bureau with the following:

“Target Cash Now is in receipt of BBB’s review letter dated June 17, 2020, which was received by us on June 23, 2020.  We take all comments, complaints, and reviews (good or bad) very seriously and will address the items noted.   First, we would like to take this opportunity to provide you with some background information on our company, its business practices, and our actions in response to your letter.  Target Cash Now is committed to complying with the spirit of all applicable federal laws and the laws of the Fort Belknap Indian Community.

Regarding our products and their terms and conditions (including repayment options), they are all explained at the time of loan origination.  Target Cash Now discloses the total cost to a borrower if only the minimum payment schedule is followed, and we inform our customers that this is an expensive form of borrowing.  We also encourage customers to pay off early with no pre-payment penalty to save on interest charges.

As to the APR, it is disclosed both on the Target Cash Now website, as well as the loan documents that are reviewed and signed by the customer.  All rates and loan fees are prominently displayed within the loan contract and are acknowledged at each point by mandatory electronic signature.  Furthermore, we advise our customers that our products should be used as a short-term source of funds – not a long-term financial solution.

Out of all the complaints received during the last twelve months, only one (1) response was not accepted by a complainant.  Most importantly, to put the volume of complaints in perspective, the complaints received over the last twelve (12) months make up less than 0.07% of Target Cash Now’s originated loans during that time.

Regardless of the above, Target Cash Now appreciates the BBB reaching out, as we always strive to offer a superb product and the best customer experience possible.  Target Cash Now specifically understands the importance BBB’s recommendations in above-referenced letter, and we would like to let you know that our website already has these recommendations implemented in a similar format.  You can find this information by going to the Target Cash Now website and clicking on the Rates tab.  From there, you will be able to use the Target Cash Now Payment Calculator to get an approximate payback amount.  Furthermore, as previously mentioned, all rates and loan fees are prominently displayed within the loan contract and are acknowledged at each point by a customer’s mandatory electronic signature.

Thank you for the opportunity respond.  As noted above, Target Cash Now is subject to robust consumer protection requirements, and we want to treat our customers well and ensure they are pleased with our product.

Better Business Bureau reminds consumers to read and understand Terms and Conditions when conducting financial transactions with a lending business.

Complaints can be filed with Better Business Bureau at www.BBB.org, as well as with the Federal Trade Commission-Consumer Protection at https://www.ftc.gov/faq/consumer-protection.”

I scheduled a payoff with target cash and was told that i would be at a zero balance. After I scheduled the payoff the system would no longer let me schedule a payment. I then noticed all of a sudden it says payment error and another payment was scheduled. I called and talked to a supervisor and multiple representatives and asked if i needed to make a payment because at this point I would just be paying interest if they kept my loan open for another 2 weeks. They assured me it was a glitch in the system and no more payments would be taken out since i already scheduled a payoff. They have sent me an email after two weeks today stating they will be taking a payment of ****** on june 5th. I can not stop the payment as my bank says ive given them authorization before and i would have to go through a dispute.

      Complaint: 21520746

I am rejecting this response because what they are saying here is not true. I did not call in to request to pay off. I went online on 3/30/24 and paid off the amount in full. i borrowed $400 but the payoff amount was $387.70. That amount did not post to my account, but $133.78 did. I immediately called and asked them what was going on. Then after the 1st, $387.70 posted. I called them back to inquire about this and they claimed I made the payment on the 1St which was not true. I have paid off my account online early before without any problem. However, I only had this loan for 2 weeks and they are trying to charge me like an extra $90. They said they could not prorate anything and refund me which I know is not true again. They are just stealing money from customers and i want them to prorate this with the correct interest and refund me my money. I have phone records to show calls made. This is a very dishonest company who needs to refund me.

      Sincerely

I am rejecting this response because: This was misleading information and anyone can see paying 3 times back an amount is unreal. Trying to pay a loan off with the same amount borrowed is not good business. I refuse to pay triple amount more than borrowed. I have submitted my payment schedule and  you can see the tremendous amount owed in order to pay off. This loan should be amended and say paid in full. Customer should not entertain this company anymore. $5000 or more for $1500 is Unreal. Please do not have them harass me anymore.

I borrowed from Target Cash late 2020. Due to unforseen issues, I fell behind on payments and the account was charged off. I was contacted by the 3rd party collection agency and made arrangements through them. All the payments were made and I thought the debt was satisfied. Now I'm getting calls from Target Cash saying they don't contract with the agency any longer and that I still owe them money. I was under the impression that once I satisfied the requirements of the 3rd party, I no longer owe.

I borrowed money from target cash now and I logged in to make an early payoff because I know their interest rates are high. When I logged in the system said my payoff balance was $354.44, however, when I checked my bank account activity, they took out an extra $157.95 and I will not be getting a refund, they stated. I borrowed $800 from Target Cash Now and have since paid $697.96 to date and my account is showing that I still owe $1595.21. I am requesting to settle my account for the remaining owed of $102.04 as I have done in the past. These are tough times and I can't afford to throw away thousands of dollars. I have revoked any and all ACH authorizations with the company from debiting any and all of my personal accounts, per Federal law, ******************** ****** Preauthorized transfers until we are able to come to an amicable agrreement. I also revoked any and all wage assignments I may have signed, including but not limited to; any affiliates, dba's, and collection agencies assigned to this account. All of the above no longer have my permission to access my accounts or impose a wage assignment.I will gladly communicate to resolve this matter in a way that suits both parties involved and I fully intend to pay back what I borrowed.Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

      Dear Better Business Bureau:

Target Cash Now is in receipt of the above-referenced complaint filed with the BBB.  We take all comments, good or bad, very seriously.  The following is our response to the items noted.

First, we would like to take this opportunity to provide you with some background information on our company, its business practices, and our actions in response to our customer.  ********************** is committed to complying with the principles of federal consumer protection laws and regulations, as well as the laws of the Fort ******* Indian Community.  Target Cash Now discloses the total cost to a borrower if only the minimum payment schedule is followed, and we inform our customers that this is an expensive form of borrowing.  The APR is disclosed on the Target Cash Now website and is prominently displayed in loan documents that are reviewed and signed by the customer.

Second, we certainly understand that everyone faces financial difficulties from time-to-time, but the loan agreement signed by ***************************** is legally binding.  Thus, we have every right to expect payment as scheduled in the agreement.  To date, ***************************** has only made a partial repayment towards the total outstanding loan balance.  Our records further indicate that the customers ACH authorization was revoked on May 3, 2023 per the customers request.

We will communicate with ***************************** directly in an effort to resolve their concerns.  Correspondingly, *****************************, at their convenience, may call our customer service line, and they will be directed to a representative who can assist them with any additional questions.

As noted above, Target Cash Now is subject to robust consumer protection requirements.  We want to treat our customers well and ensure that they are pleased with our product.  Thank you for the opportunity to respond.

I had logged into my account on 5/4/23 to pay off my loan. I went to payment options and chose to pay off in full and it gave me a dollar amount for the pay off and I selected that option and then submitted. I received a email saying that you for paying your loan off. The amount came out of my checking account on 5/5/23. Then I saw another withdrawal from Target cash now for the amount I would have paid if I didnt pay it off. I called them to get that second withdrawal back and they told me they would not refund me because I did not contact them three days prior to paying it off. I feel that if that was the case then it should not have allowed me to make the pay off selection online. I feel like they stole money from me.

Second, ******************* request to pay off the loan coincided with an already-scheduled payment draft in accordance with the customers loan agreement.  This payment was already being processed at the time of ******************* request.  This regularly scheduled payment was accounted for when the payoff amount was quoted. ************************* has no remaining financial obligation to Target Cash Now.  *************************, at their convenience, may call our customer service line and they will be directed to a representative who can assist them with any additional questions.

I am rejecting this response because: When I went online to pay it off it did not note that the scheduled payment was already accounted for. This was not made clear at all when I chose the option to pay it off. It should have noted that when I made the selection to pay off in full. So since this was not made clear online I feel as if I should receive money back.

      Sincerely,
