My partner and I adopted a cat back in November of 2023 through Ithaca’s ******** charities, and he originally came from the Elmira Animal Shelter. We were told that he was 6 years old and in perfect health. When we took him to the vet, within 5 minutes and absolutely no testing, she knew that he was at minimum 12 years old, most likely at least 14. He needs extensive dental surgery, has an active infection due to the state of his mouth, is arthritic, and is in the early stage of kidney disease, which is terminal in cats.
We are devastated. I called the shelter over a week ago and the receptionist gave me a nasty attitude, and then said she would have someone named Craig call me back. We are still waiting on a call. My partner and I are college students, and while we can afford the regular pet costs, we are unprepared for the almost $2000 in surgery, pet fees, and expensive kidney diet food. I’ve included an estimated cost for just the surgery below. I have also paid $250 for a blood panel as well as another $140 for a urine test due to his kidneys. This is completely unacceptable and they should be investigated at the minimum. Below I have included a screenshot of the emails sent to me by the shelter as well as their file on my cat, which clearly states him as allegedly 6 years and 2 months.
