On 11/19 I took my Chevy Silverado to Sunnyside Chevrolet to have the front brake pads replaced. I also asked them to drive the truck because I felt it was not running optimally and I though a tune up may be in order. The service department called and told me the price on the brakes and that the tech recommended a transmission fluid flush and a tune up, new plugs etc. That was approximately $1000.00 more in addition to the brakes. I authorized this service. I picked up the truck on 11/21 and it seemed to be driving fine. The next day I noticed a noise from the right side of the engine and planned to take it back to Sunnyside to see what the issue was. The next day after stopping at a traffic light on the highway, the truck would not shift through the gears and I was stuck driving 20 mph. I was able to get it back to Sunnyside, where I left it until I could contact their service department and let them know what happened. After the tech looked at the truck, I was told it needed a new transmission and the estimated price would be $6000.00. Sunnyside had not even informed me there was an issue with the transmission. I thought the work that was done was routine maintenance. I called around to other auto repair shops to get competitive estimates. I was told multiple times that since my truck had high mileage 130K and it had not had regular transmission service it was a risk to do a transmission fluid flush. The transmission fluid flush could accelerate any existing issues. This was never explained to me but acknowledged by Sunnyside after the fact. I was never given the option to continue driving my truck in the state it was in or take a chance on a transmission fluid flush that could resolve the issue. I contacted the service manager asking for some accountability and a major discount on repairs. I was offered $500.00 off of a $6000.00 expense after already spending $1000.00 which I did not feel was sufficient. I asked them to split the cost and was denied.

    Business response

The customer brought his vehicle in for the recommended brake repair. He explained his concern but did not authorize diagnostic time but requested a tune up estimate.  The technician briefly road tested the vehicle and verified it has a torque converter shudder (trans concern).  The technician recommended a transmission flush to determine if it would alleviate the shudder which we do regularly.  90% of the time the flush takes care of the issue.  The remaining 10% show a concern after the flush which this one did.  The flush does not cause a transmission issue but may uncover an underlying issue as did here.  The customer was advised, and he declined repairs.  The customer was also reimbursed the cost of the flush and tune up as a courtesy to the amount of 900.00 dollars.  The customer decided to have the vehicle towed elsewhere.
