We were impressed by the service of the design staff and construction manager, but the contractors that were used for construction during the COVID situation seemed to have been limited in their experience and ability. There were a handful of minor issues that I was able to repair myself or that Shaw took care of through the warranty process. The major issue that is the reason for this review is a roof leak above the back porch that was discovered a little more than a year after closing. The paperwork we were given at closing stated that the roof was covered under the 2-year warranty, but the claim was denied. Upon calling the office, I was told that the roof was only covered by the 1-year warranty and that they didn’t have any record of paperwork stating otherwise. They could not explain why my paperwork was different and stated that they were obliged to adhere to the standards they have on file. I asked if any concession could be made due to the fact that we were provided with inaccurate information. They stated that they could not move forward with such an effort because they could not verify the authenticity of our hardcopy. They made it clear that it was not their belief that the documents were falsified, but rather that they simply could not take further action without finding hard evidence that the documents in question came from their office. I was told to attempt a claim through the Quality Builders Warranty (third party adjunct), but only ever received an automated email response. We have since hired a specialist to test the house for mold and will be hiring a roofer out-of-pocket to make the repairs. After repairs are completed we will be looking into mold remediation, as the specialist noted significant humidity in the wall space above the area of the leak.

Shaw homes is engaging in morally questionable business practices, that could be interpreted as fraud. We purchased a spec home from them that had already started construction. They did not allow us to choose any options, but they had already planned for their "master bath upgrade". Besides the fact that they failed to complete more than half of the identified issues during our walk through, we were forced to close on the house without a master bathroom shower door. During closing we were told it would be 1-2 months before they installed the glass door. After 6 months, and multiple ignored follow-up emails, they finally admitted that the shower door had no lead time for delivery, and decided they would issue a check for the value of the door only. Aside from the fact that the check would not cover the cost of a new door, let alone the installation, I found out that they continued to offer the same "upgrade" to other new customers. Even though they knew that they would not be able to deliver on the shower door for anyone, they continued to sell and offer the upgrade. When confronted on the fact that they were willing and knowingly deceiving customers, they attempted to threaten me over the additional warranty issues we submitted for our home. They have yet to fix any issues or claims for us since this incident. I am not a lawyer, but I have contacted one regarding this issue. If anyone else has evidence that they were sold and promised a shower door and Shaw failed to deliver, please leave a comment and I will have my lawyer reach out to you directly for a statement.

My July 2021 review disappeared. People need to know.... Buyer Beware!!!! The Shaw Homes sales team is very skilled at selling the brand as a family oriented company. From the start of our model home tour through permits of our build being finalized, Shaw was great at communication. Once the construction process began, they became one of the least transparent companies I have ever dealt with. That was something we learned to deal with and we watched as our build progressed. It all changed for us last week, 9 months after signing our contract. We were called on a Saturday by someone we had never met. We were told that we had to decide if we wanted to pay an extra $30,000 over our purchase agreement or terminate the contract. It only went downhill rapidly over the next few business days. We weren't provided any information on what items increased in price or allowed to negotiate in any way. I feel that we were completely bullied out of our contract just so Shaw could make a few extra bucks. They don't care about you or honoring contracts. Run as fast as you can! Update: we also at the time asked what would happen if the appraisal was low and their suggested lender wouldn't give us an opinion on appraisal value, even though he guaranteed us it would appraise for the original contract price before we signed. After reading the other review below on VA loans it was just as suspected. If we signed the new contract price we would have had to have that in cash or we would have lost our house at close. I am grateful every day that we dodged this bullet and Shaw didn't get to keep a dime of our money.

They built the house below the road level with a driveway sloped to the house. When questioned the supervisor kept saying it will be fine but it had been a series problem from day 1. 2017. Now they built the next house on a higher level the driveway looks like a pool. Sent them the photo and called them for a solution they simply ignore. Earlier mails got replies like they can't do anything and is beyond warranty period. It's soo bad they have no shame about their bad construction and forcing the customers to suffer. But none of these reviews will matter it seems. Once they got your money you're out of luck to get their attention. Very poor quality electrical wiring and landscaping. They installed the two trees with all the metal wire mesh that killed the tree. I had to dig them out and plant new trees. What a rip off. Some might have got lucky but definitely not us. The house value may be low because of these shaw intellectual designs.

Moved into my home in April 2022 built by Shaw Homes! Loved the process and the final product. Had a couple of small warranty claims and they are addressed quickly!

Absolutely zero communication. We've been under contract since 17 February 2022. Until a month ago there had been nothing done on our property. A month ago they fired the superintendent, now there's a new one. Footers and plumbing have been done Fourth of July weekend, now we're at a stand still again!!! We get the run around every time we try to get ahold of someone, have you spoken to so or so, no because nobody returns our calls, no email communications either. Now we're trying to get out of the contract and we still get the "you need to speak to Chad, he'll be able to answer your questions. I'll have him call you", sorry but we don't believe your secretary. We know she's doing her job but her bosses are not.

    ***** and Michelle,

I'm very sorry for your frustration. I've looked into your complaint of no communication. I do see that you were receiving weekly updates regarding the phase of construction you were in. I have also spoke to the superintendent over your project and he says there was never any attempt by you to reach him by phone or email. Our policy is that if a customer reaches out to a superintendent, they are to respond within 24 hours and although not perfect our guys do a very good job at keeping to this standard. I know you came to the office and were instructed to talk with Chad, but our first step is to have your salesperson reach out to you. I know that you spoke to your salesperson soon after this. After that I see that Chad did reach out to you. The reason you gave him that you wanted out of your contract is because the superintendent couldn't guarantee that the home would be done by a certain date. I have looked through your contract and do not see anywhere in it that Shaw homes agreed to have it done by this date and it is even very specific to the fact that during construction delays can and do incur. It is in all our best interest to complete the home in a timely manner since we are carrying the loan on the home, and you only have a small deposit invested.

Since this post was created you have since let us know you have purchased a different home and that is why you want to cancel. You signed an agreement with us to build you a specific home and you chose to break that agreement. We have agreed to release you from the contract. We wish you the best, but your BBB complaint is not factual or warranted.
