On or around May 1st of this year we had sewage back up into our garage through the drain. We called Airco to address the issue. They sent a plumber who attempted to get into the condensate drain by using a chisel and hammer to open the cap instead of using a blowtorch to loosen it and then open it. As a result he broke the cap and the threading. Subsequently, sewer gas began to seep into the house. The solution suggested was calling another plumber as they felt the issue was the backflow valve. We called Airco and they admitted the error and sent over another plumber to fix the cap. They were only able to put duct tape and silicone over it but said that due to the angle the only way to fix it properly was to take out the cement and remove the water tank. This would be approximately a $6000 repair. Sewer gas continued to seep into the house. We contacted Airco to express our upset and concerns and we did not receive a response back. We had to call another plumber who removed the water tank and had to replace it, fix the cap properly, and established that the backflow was not the problem. The sewer gas is no longer seeping into the house. If the Airco plumber had simply heated the cap he would have been able to loosen it and fix any problem there and replace the cap. We would not have had to have the water tank removed, a new one installed and a new cap installed. The job was $2900.00 plus we had paid Airco $303 for the visit that broke the cap. I would like compensation for the extra work that had to be done because that cap was broken ($2900) and not simply opened and closed as should have been the case and for the visit that broke the cap in the first place ($303). They do not stand by their work and do not fix the things they break.

      Business Response

Business Response /* (1000, 8, 2022/06/24) */ We reviewed customers account, along with contacting ******** who installed the hot water tank and plug to drain. The drain issue is further down the line in the sewer system which we offered a few different solutions, including running a camera to verify what the problem is further down the drainage system. The drain has nothing to do with the hot water, the drain is backing up causing a sewer smell. After our techs evaluation we believe the backflow preventer is bad and needs replaced. Without a camera or removing the tank and gaining better access to the drain we cannot confirm exactly the issue, unfortunately it is the way the home was built. Consumer Response /* (3000, 10, 2022/06/28) */ (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.) The issue is that they broke a plug that then emitted sewer gas into the house. The water heater would not have to have been changed if they had not broken the plug. There is not problem further down the line as the city does not even require the valve by bylaw that the company is referring to. Once ******** repaired the plug the problem was resolved. This company actually came back to try and fix the plug for free since they had broken it and told us that in order to properly repair it they would need to remove the concrete and the water tank for a cost of $6000 which was double the work that was done. Business Response /* (4000, 12, 2022/07/06) */ The drain was difficult to access under the hot water tank, therefore to clear the old cast iron floor drain, the plug had to be removed. Please submit plug repair invoice for review of reimbursement of the plug. The tank and drain plug are two separate issues, Airco did not condemn replacement of a hot water tank, service was called in for a drain backing up. Consumer Response /* (4200, 14, 2022/07/17) */ (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.) Given that we were not advised of the results from breaking the cap and the implications of having to replace the entire water tank so that anyone could get at the cap and fix it we do not accept your proposal. We counter with a refund for the visit from the technician who broke the cap and you know what that cost as you issued the receipt. We expect you to refund the full amount as you broke the cap during that visit, caused more damage and were unable to remedy the broken cap without a very expensive remedy which we followed up on. Business Response /* (4000, 16, 2022/07/20) */ Have spoken with the customer and a mutual agreement of a refund of last tech visit of $307.25 is being funded back to the customer. Consumer Response /* (2000, 18, 2022/07/21) */ (The consumer indicated he/she ACCEPTED the response from the business.) This is the best offer they will make so I will accept it. They have apologized. Consumer Response /* (3000, 23, 2022/07/25) */ Once we accepted the settlement they sent it to the wrong party (the **********************). The check needs to be reissued to us not the **********************. My bank account shows the payment for 307.25. We no longer accept the resolution until they issue it to the correct party. Business Response /* (4000, 25, 2022/07/26) */ We are issuing a check to the customer in the amount of $307.25 and are reverting the refund made to the *** card. Business Response /* (4000, 30, 2022/08/04) */ Called 8-3-22 and confirmed with Ms. ****** that check was received and the invoice is closed with no balance. No other concerns. Consumer Response /* (4200, 32, 2022/08/05) */ (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.) Please remove my name from the content of the response from airco and then I will accept.
