After a major system update, Direct Energy lost everything. Six accounts and my credit card information they've had on file for about a year. I could not access my account nor could I make a one time payment online. When I called to make payments, the same card they had on file is now being declined (verified, nothing wrong with the card/account). After several failed attempts by Customer Support to correct anything, I canceled all six accounts and took my business to a more competent company.Review from Dawn W

Very rude and aggressive door sakes rep. I advised not inerested. Tone was aggressive and rude when stated oh you want a high bill your electric was just switched. I knew this just received a letter. I advised I would call. He made a couple more remarks I ended up just shutting the door to end the conversation.Review from Cassie S

Direct Energy needs to inform their employees about the right of rescission. I called to cancel my contract a day after I signed up due to finding a much cheaper rate, and their representative lied to me and told me I could not cancel because my service had already started. Luckily, I did my research. I had to call back to inform your employees of their 3-day grace period. I'm so happy I was able to cancel if this is any reflection of their customer service. Their internal system also seems to be flawed. I spoke to 2 reps who were unable to change my service start or cancel date due to "their system". Not to mention the 2 hours I spend on the phone resolving these matters.Direct Energy, LP Response

A Direct Energy sales rep knocked on my door and asked to see the back of my energy bill. He stated that local electric rates were high and wanted to check the back of my energy bill. Thankfully, I looked them up before continuing the conversation. I implore anyone reading this, look at their company's ********* ***** They were fined in 2004 for forging contracts into long-term energy contracts and again in 2009 for not making it clear to customers that they were signing up for unregulated energy rates. I'm shocked a company of this size would try to blatantly scam someone in-person (or scam in general). If any Direct Energy rep knocks on your door tell them immediately you're not interested and close the door. Do NOT give any sensitive information and do not show them your energy bill.Review from Ramone L

The company significantly increased my charges when they transitioned me to an average pay plan during my deployment, despite my family's minimal electricity usage. Frustrated by the high bill and the additional charges for leaving the month-to-month plan, I decided to cancel. However, upon switching, they added a $469 service adjustment charge, pushing my bill close to $800. Despite their awareness that they can remove the charge, they refuse to do so.Review from james s

My wife signed up for their fixed rate when we lived in our first house. We kept it when we moved out and turned it into a rental property but we did not use it on our new house. That lasted for several years. We recently sold the house Feb 2024. On 03 April 2024 they started calling once a day every business day to get us to switch to the new house. I answered the phone on the 8th and told them i was not interested and the guy on the line tried to shame/insult me into switching. i said no and hung up. They continued to call me every single day monday - friday. today 19 april 2024 is the first day they did not call. Since i answered and said no, now a machine calls us and says that all the operators are busy and to stay on the line. I am on the do not call list and they still call everyday after being told no. This is a predatory company, avoid at all costs. i would rather pay a higher bill every month than deal with them again.Direct Energy, LP Response

Very good until I moved! I submitted forms online to cancel service January 3rd. They have decided to bill me for 3 weeks post-move out for power used by the new homeowner. I have spent countless hours on the phone with their foreign outsourced service department who generally have no idea what I’m saying. My telling them “I did not live there after 01/03 and I submitted forms saying so ahead of time” is generally met with “yeah but you owe us for power used until the 24th.” Now I’m being harassed by a credit claims agency, have that on my record, and having to spend even more hours on the phone with these people. If this is not resolved VERY SOON I will be getting a lawyer.Direct Energy, LP Response

Here's a cautionary tale about using Direct Energy as your electric provider. Our contract was expiring in February so we called about renewing it. We were told of a plan that was better than our current one and it would save us money. He even told us our highest usage last year during the summer would be a smaller payment under this plan. So, we signed up for a year. A month goes by and we were charged $150 for a minimal ???? Calls are made saying why this is the case. Bottom line - Direct Energy said they reviewed the phone call and they say we were told $150 is the minimum you will pay every month and it will only go higher on usage. This is a LIE - we were never told that. I asked to release the phone conversation record for us and they rejected. Why would we sign up for such a stupid plan. To make matters worse, they give us a new plan - called Direct Solar - we agree, but a few minutes later they call back and say since we don't have solar panels, that was a mistake and they reneged on it. We finally settled for another plan. So, lesson learned - if you use Direct Energy be very careful cause they will LIE to you. If you don't use Direct Energy, good for you and don't use them. Misleading and predatory sales tactics!!! Sales representatives here were going door to door asking to see your bill to check the "variable" rate that your paying claiming they supply the energy to **** **** *** ******** *** and were "concerned" that an error in billing is leaving you paying too much. Once they get a look at that bill all they need your account number to switch you over, which they have been reported doing in other areas. ****** "direct energy account number scam"...you have been warned.Direct Energy, LP Response

I live in a 1 bedroom about 600 square ft close to maybe 700. I enrolled in free nights and weekends and my bill has been around 356-600 a month it makes 0 sense!!! This companies a scam, now they sent me a letter because im no longer with them stating i owe them 1000.Direct Energy, LP Response
